Description

A supraluminal freight ship accelerates to lightspeed and beyond.

Put this into the experimental folder.

Throughout the years, I have been constantly inspired by the classic SF artist, John Harris. Ever since I got my first computer - a Sinclair ZX81 - and perhaps even before, as I got my hands on the manual from a school Computer class and that featured his amazing art. You can see his work here: www.alisoneldred.com/john-harr… (His agent's website).

For those that aren't familiar, Harris creates impressionistic, haze filled images whose scale ranges to voluminous and massive proportions: towering citadels of machines, ships adrift in the infinite void, that sort of thing.  For his workup sketches, he uses pastels on paper before committing the image to oil.

This image was inspired by playing Starfield, unlocking a connection to my own creative writing projects. There is a character in one novel that begged for a "prequel" story and the inspiration gave life to a more realized version of the idea. I sketched the idea and made notes and a week later painted this as I watched the Singapore Grand Prix while munching on breakfast.    It was designed as book cover for the future project, but I guess like so many of my projects, will end up collecting dust after an initial frenzy of work. At least something got done. I feel the potential is there, so I'm happy to keep trundling along with it.

I wanted an image that would be "in your face" and yet slightly mysterious, colourful and striking, loose and yet hinting at details, perhaps like a matte painting for a movie.  I deliberately left it loose and rough, lumps and all to try and keep it feel energetic. The pastels did a lot of that for me, but also my lack of experience with the brushes in particular meant that I couldn't "refine" much. It certainly works better from afar, rather than upclose (as impressionistic pieces should be, IMO), so my advice is to step back... No... Further... Further... Fuuuuurrrthhhhhheeerrrr......  Now squint.

Its all digital pastels, courtesy of Ittai Manero.

Drawn completely in ProCreate 5.
