Description
This is in continuity with this other pic I suggest you read the description in the other one first for details on the differences between TLK and SP animation styles, and to understand better what I did here. Some people were curious as to how would the two Simbas look if I keep their respective colors intact, but switch the shading style from each movie. So here we have TLK Simba with the shading, highlights and gradient used in the sequel, and SP Simba with the more simplistic shading used in the original movie.
Personally, while I favor the first movie most of the time, I gotta say, my definitive favorite in this pic is the lower one (SP colors combined with the simple shading of the original film). I really think it's the extra effects that Disney used in TLK2, what made the animation look not as "clean" or "polished" as in the first one. Many people who complain about Simba's Pride animation, blame the colors the most, but for me, while they are a factor, it's the way the shading was used that made the bigger difference.
Either way, I love both movies, and I hope I'm not sounding picky by pointing those minor details, I simply find interesting to analyze this kind of things, it can also help us sometimes with our own art

I think my favorite would be the SP with TLK shading (but with a SLIGHT color lift)

TLK shading style is the better. It helps define the shape of the head and such a little more.

God the first one is so much prettier imo! I know it's bright, but honestly the second image seems more plain/boring.
I love the highlights

Yeah, I like Simba's golden pelt better in comparision, although, while I do like the use of highlights in artwork, when it comes to animation, I tend to like it better when the characters are shaded in a more simple way, like in the bottom pic here. But I guess that's just my personal taste

I should have said this in the previous pic: The Lion King 2 is produced and animated in Australia, have y'all ever heard of DisneyToon Studios. I think that's the cause of the colors being different.

Yes, I know that, I was a bit of a geek when it came to animation back then, during the years of Disney sequels. Almost all, if not all of the direct-to-DVD sequels were made in the studio located in Australia. Interestingly, you can see that over time, these movies improved in quality, in the latest "sequel years" the animation even rivaled those of the feature films.

Oh my gosh, the difference that shading makes!! Wow! I have both comparison pics in different tabs and when I switch back and forth... it's crazy that the shading alters the whole feel of it!

I don't mean to offend anyone, but the two shading styles do not look that much different to me.

They're the same generally speaking, it's the fact that in Simba's Pride the animators also added extra effects to it like highlights and gradients that saturate the characters. Also, placing the shading layer under the line art, while it may sound like a silly minor detail, it actually makes a huge difference in many parts of the movie, maybe not so much here in this drawing, but in adult Simba in particular is very noticeable due to the many lines that are part of his mane that pretty much dissappear when placing the shading this way.
Again, it's minor and not a big deal or anything, Simba's Pride still have very good animation and it's certainly better than that of most Disney Direct-to-DVD sequels, but sometimes even the slightest details makes a huge difference.

I like the bottom image MUCH better as well. Just the simple, yet beautiful style TLK used is incredible, and it makes a huge difference.

I never noticed that there even was a difference in shading between the two movies, thanks for bringing it to my attention!

I'm so glad someone noticed and pointed this out. I always thought that, even with the rougher lines, TLKII could have really benefited from the first movie's shading style. I always felt that the lines blended into the shading too much.

oh dang, i never really noticed how the shading made the lines disappear, that's trippy!

I really like how the shading is on the Simba from SP with the TLK shading. In my opinion it looks better than the SP shading on Simba from SP.
