Description
The A.C. Char C5 performed extremely well on tests and in the field, and thus a lot of variations and modifications were made to that model. One of the possible total modifications was the A.C. Char C5-122, classified as an Assault Gun.
In the beginning of February 1940, the most important R&D factory came up with the plan to convert the Char C5 to a heavy gun platform, to hammer down fortifications and suppress infantry.
Engineers then proceeded to mount a 122mm gun inside the extended hull.
This modifications proved successful, although it only had 84 units rolling out of the factory.
One of the primary reasons of small production was that the 122mm gun was already outdated by the time it was put in this tank.
Compared to the model it was derived from, this one had its hull extended upwards to create a bigger space to house crew, ammo and the 122mm gun.
Slight changes were made to the engine to ensure maximum output could be produced - the Joubert V12-B 285 hp petrol engine. On the road it had a top speed of 39 km/h.
This particular engine change cause a lot of trouble for it, and failures under heavy usage wasn't uncommon.
The weight of the assault gun was 23.9 tons.
At the front the Char C5-122 had an armor plate which was 40mm in thickness. The sides had a respective 25mm thickness of armor, and the rear of the vehicle had 25mm as well.
On top of the hull was extended upwards and shared the same armor thickness of 40mm like on the bottom part of the hull, but due to its sloping it would be around 60mm effectively.
The main armament was a 122 mm Modèle Cardinal 1938. With the bow machine gun and the top turret one being an improved 7.84 Mitraillette 1940.
One exciting feature was indeed the well-armoured top turret which had a machine gun, which could fire all around the tank.
The crew of 5 had the following roles: driver, loader, commander/top turret machine-gunner, gunner, radio operator/bow machine-gunner.

That gun looks a bit small for a 122mm

Yeah, I thought so. I will change it, thanks.

Very nice, but with such a large gun I suspect it can't carry too much internal ammo and needs a dedicated supply train...

Indeed, it wasn't practical at all. So production numbers were low.
It would still carry about 16 shells or so.
