Description The Puff Adder or Eastern Hognose snake is non-venomous but you would never guess that by the way it carries on. I had never seen one so I had no idea what to expect... it lifted its head and the neck flattened and stretched sideways like a Cobra's hood and it made a lot of noise with a its loud hissing... I gotta' say it really looked dangerous!!!! They are about 2 feet long and eat toads [not quite what I expected from the the behavior I had witnessed... I figured they probably ate bears and mountain lions].

hognose snakes are not called puff adders. Puff adders are a totally different species with a aggressive behavior and a WAY more protent venom

Although there is a deadly "puff adder" in Africa... there is also one here and its other name is "hognose snake"!!! [check out your Web Search]

It does the Cobra thing with the upper neck spreading into a hood... making the head look massive!!! I really appreciate all your comments and faves... I love the feed back!!!!

Yu are very Welcme Theo, Good shots certainly deserve Good feed-back, for sharing All of your wonderous pics with us all- must have been a tad scary with "the Cobra" effect - certainly not a "Pretty" Snake , though the colouration is quite beautiful- I've used Python Snake skin, on many pieces, i've made, its lovely to work with

It really got our adrenaline flowing... I figured anything that aggressive had to be poisonous! A few years ago I was clearing some ground with a hoe when a baby rattlesnake come after me and he wouldn't stop... since he was at the edge of our garden and he was still undeterred after 10 or 15 minutes of me keeping him beyond striking distance I had to do him in! We got a lot of photos of the Puff Adder and a great story... we were very glad to meet him!!!

I guess

Yeah Rattler's can be tenacious, lol like the Irish, & Scots they just never can give up ( I have many friends of each) but was never able to befriend even a baby Rattler, lol

These guys do put on an Oscar-deserving act, that's for certain, yet few snakes are as gentle and as UNLIKELY to bite as an Eastern Hognose. It's 100% bluff! You made a good capture of this one with its hood fully extended, for the whole Cobra effect!
