It's funny, I remember watching behind the scenes of Lord of the Rings and Weta Workshop said they really drew on art nouveau for the elves look, and with the dwarves whey were heavy with geometric shapes, no flowing lines at all. But actually the nouveau style really looks good on the dwarves!

Yeah, I have one of the LotR art books and the concept designs for the elves are very pretty and art nouveau though I have to say that some of it looks better on paper than in the actual set designs, they overdid it a bit with the elvish interiors imo. Unfortunately art nouveau can quickly look over the top and quite tacky, it's a fine line. I think colors are really important to balance those flowy, flowery designs, if you go with all pastels the whole look quickly becomes saccharine.
I also have to admit that I suck at drawing things like knotwork and elaborate geometric patterns that the dwarves sport on all their clothes and architecture so that's another reason for art nouveau dwarves XD

Your right, art nouveau has be done with a gentle touch, it was perhaps over done a bit in the movies (still my ideal Middle Earth vacation spot though ), but I loved how open all the buildings were, always large windows or open ceilings so nothing felt constricting and it blended seamlessly with nature....quite the opposite of the dwarves hehe

This is beautiful, I really like all the textures you've worked into this and the varying line weights. It almost looks art nouveau, but in a much more earthy, masculine way.

Thank you so much. Art nouveau is one of my favourite art styles ever but it's a bit difficult to connect such a flowy, flowery style with Tolkien's dwarves who are all hardy and earthy like you said. So I'm glad this works for you.

I love the light (immediately made me think of a fire burning) and Thorin's weary expression. Beautiful work!

Thank you very much. I wanted to do something a bit challenging with the light in this one so I'm glad that you think that fire glow is coming across.
