Her parents told her, "Don't. Do not go to *that* area of the town. It's full with poor, dirty, diseased people. You'll be better off not even looking at them. Out of sight, out of mind."

But sometimes, they would pass through the place, on their way here or there and she'd look at them. Abandoned, lonely, neglected, she saw the suffering of those who were inconvenient for society to look after. Something inside of her stirred. She looked at how much she had and how little they had and something inside of her pulled at her.

She wondered if people could really disappear if others simply disregarded them and the thought made her cry.

When her birthday came around, her parents asked what gifts she would like. She replied immediately, knowing exactly what she had wanted.

"Please let me go and share what I have with others. I know you have cautioned me for my own good, for my own safety, but just for today, I would like to buy food and medicine for the poor and share what I have."
