Description These are some mini screen shots, but this makes the Linux Desktop look and act like Windows XP. You're gonna have to download this otherwise you're probably not going to be able to see this very well. Full resolution pics available on request -- just don't request until after you've gone to this url: [link]

Make sure you WANT to test drive this thing before you ask me for the 8MB Screen Capture Zip File From Hell

Is it built in to Linux to switch to, or is it a download?

Download, but it was easy. I just download their auto-installer script and ran it. Then I logged out. And click on "select session" and selected LXP and logged in. Then it asks if you wanna just use it for this session only, or as your default.

Ya see the cool thing is -- with Linux -- Desktop environments are almost like Winamp Skins, in a way. You can have as many installed as you want. Use which ever you want at any time you want

Now here's what really makes the Linux Desktop powerful.

The breakdown:

- X11.org Desktop (what everything runs on top of. it doesn't actually do anything cept for rendering the graphics)

- The Desktop Environment Itself (the core of it. the platform)

- File Manager (unlike Wincrap, the file manager is not integrated into the DE. even if you use sharpe or litestep, you still can't avoid using Windows Exploder aka explorer.exe, for some things. With Linux, you can use the default file manager that comes with the DE -- or -- you can use something else -- or -- you can use more than one file manager if ya want. whatever floats yer boat)

- Window Manager (ah, the next breakdown that Windows totally does not have. the Window manager controls the function and cosmetics of the window borders. what options you have. the graphical theming. animation and effects. all that shit. so that means you can give your windows even more options on the Linux Desktop)

- Theme Manager aka "Appearance" (Very similar to the Microsoft Appearance Setting, though you can customize a fuck of a lot more)

- Plugins & Addons (Desktop Plugins & Addons are the shit. Things like Beryl for awesome 3d options and effects. Addons that do everything from weather alerts to allowing you to pimp your start menu and bars, such as what KBFX can do for KDE. thats how KDE is able to look like vista, for example)

Theres more but you get the idea. This sort of breakdown speeds up the desktop and allows for more flexibility because they are all separate proccesses taking up their own memory and cpu allocations. So if one decides to get stupid for a few seconds, your whole Desktop doesn't turn to pudding as a result.

Ok...that's impressive, but what if you've got Windows messed around
with enough that it doesn't fuck up anyway?I haven't had any lock-ups
or bluescreens of death except when I was trying a wrong driver on my
video card a while back, aside from that, no lock-ups since Win2000.

I do however like the idea of only 1 thing fucking up at a time...I
remember when something'd screw up, I'D be totally screwed until it
finally decided to snap out of it.Having only that one thing do it
would be an improvement, but like I said, mine doesn't do any of it.

The thing is though -- your Windows will eventually collapse. You've just delayed the inevitable. I've got a Win2k install on what I call "Terminal1" aka "the bitch box" or "bitch slave box" -- and it's a special use system, so its only used for certain shit and thats it. This setup should last about 2 years, at least. But even though I've locked it down quite a bit, it will still eventually blow up. It will also still have many of the more subtle annoyances that Windows has.

Only user error can hose a perfectly working Linux Box. So it's not like I'm saying Linux is perfect and infallible. Nothing man made is unbreakable, thats for sure.

But with a well configured system, even the dumbest idiot shouldn't be able to break the thing.

This is also why I love installing Linux for people who are complete and utter fucking morons. Experienced Users can enjoy the perks of Linux, but you can sleep better at night knowing that morons aren't gonna be constantly bugging you to clean up after their messes.

who needs the windows design when you are already sick of it?

a very enlightened statement. the problem is, most people aren't as enlightened. people fear change. more and more people are waking up to the fact that a lot of new stuff doesn't mean overly complicated and that change can be rewarding -- but as of yet, the people still walking around going "duh wabbits george" still out number those who are finally starting to get it. so to wake the masses up more -- you need to make things they are used to. sort of like the worm on the proverbial hook.

do however note that Look-XP is very customizable making it very easy to create a theme that looks nothing at all like XP. It's just yet another DE. any DE can be modded because they tend to be simple to mod. everything is either *.xmp or *.png files in a series of intricate directories controlled by a text config file.

it takes some time to track it all down but once you do, its a no brainer to clone a current theme and edit a bunch of graphics files.
