Qualities
Accuracy I - Throw a ball and this barlak will nail it before it hits the ground almost every time. Barlaks with Accuracy get a bonus to targeted actions. For example, when trying to catch a ball or a frisbee, bite or claw prey, snap up or swipe a fish, nip at the heels of livestock just hard enough to get them moving but not hard enough to do damage, or similar situations. The higher level this Quality is, the higher the bonus.

Discipline - This barlak is not easy to distract or dissuade and, even if it happens to be a challenging beast in general (depending on other Qualities and Flaws) it will still respond to a firm, consistent hand. It may or may not be particularly obedient or diligent, but once it's in action and has its mind on a goal, it's very hard to break its focus. This barlak does not suffer any penalties that would usually be incurred for distractions (crowd noise, strong/weird smells, intact barlaks exposed to other intact barlaks and thus tempted to either court or seek dominance instead of doing whatever they're supposed to be doing), conditions (rain, mud, fog...) or similar.

Fisher II
 - This barlak has a natural aptitude for catching fish by various means, including the dive-and-bite and the bear swipe. Gains a bonus to fishing-related activities and events/competitions of all kinds. The bonus is proportionate to the number of levels the barlak has in Fisher.

Light-Footed - This barlak is more nimble and sure-footed than average. It may or may not be remarkably swift in a straight run, but when it comes to dodging, darting, and dealing with obstacles, this barlak has a real aptitude. This barlak gets a bonus when competing in Agility and similar sports (cross-country racing, for example) that is proportionate to the level of this Quality, and a smaller bonus when competing in or performing a rolled activity/training where this ability is an advantage (some forms of small game hunting, for example.)

Prey Drive - This barlak was bred to hunt and take down prey, or else it retains the hunting instincts of a wild barlak. It gains a bonus in activities or competitions that involve hunting ability, but is not safe around animals that resemble the creatures it was bred to hunt (potentially most animals, if this trait is due to having wild blood.)

Quick Learner I - This animal is smarter than the average bar. It picks up new ideas with relative ease. As such, it is easier to train. This barlak’s chance to fail to learn is reduced by 2% per level of this Quality (cannot drop to 0%.) Additionally, it gains 1 XP per successful training per level of this Quality; this is cumulative with other bonuses, but the total cannot exceed the maximum-XP-per-training cap.

Strong Body I - This is a well-muscled animal with sturdy bones and a solid physique. Slight reduction to chance of injury during risky activities. Gains a score bonus in events where strength is an advantage proportionate to the level of the trait. Gains a bonus to health and soundness evaluations when a show, event, or competition requires such.

Tenacity II - This barlak just will not give up. It will push itself to keep going when other barlaks would give up or even collapse. Tenacity is a temperament Quality and refers to the barlak’s willingness and ability to push itself forward, to continue to work or perform in the face of exhaustion, intimidation, pain, and other challenges. When a barlak with Tenacity is being trained and fails to learn, it gets one reroll on the training per level in Tenacity to attempt to successfully learn (representing the barlak’s will to keep trying until it gets things right.) Extremely tenacious barlaks rarely fail to learn. In wilderness activities, Tenacious barlaks are less likely to fail to find anything. Also, starting at level I, they get a chance to find an extra prey/fish/foraged item that increases at level II and becomes a guaranteed extra at level III. In other activities and in competitions and events and the like, Tenacity allows the barlak one chance to reroll any failed roll to ignore a distraction, overcome a challenge, push through pain and keep competing, or similar. These animals are often Obsessive Workers.

Virility I (carried) - Male barlaks with this trait quickly become known as superior sires. The maximum size of any clutch sired by this barlak is raised by 1 (cumulative with other bonuses, to a max of up to 6 eggs in a clutch.) At level I, they also gain +10% to their odds to pass down their Qualities. At level II, this chance rises to +20%. At Level III, they have +25% and they gain +2 to maximum clutch size rather than +1 (again, cumulative with other bonuses up to a maximum clutch size of 6.) Females cannot express this trait, but they can carry it and pass it down to their sons.

Waterproof Coat - The barlak's coat is unusually dense, oily, and sleek in an oddly plush way (somewhat similar to sea otter or fur seal) regardless of its overall length. These bars have a shiny overcoat and a downy, thick undercoat. Improves swimming speed slightly, and reduces the speed penalty for swimming while fully submerged. Reduces the penalty to a greater degree if the barlak also has the Rawboned variation. It also provides superior insulation against cold water, though these animals tend to suffer in hot weather on land.

Working Drive II - This animal is highly motivated to work. It needs to have some kind of job, in fact, to maintain it mental health. Animals with high levels of Working Drive tend to choose jobs for themselves if not trained to one, which can be very inconvenient for people. As such, working drive is usually not found outside Working Class breeds and actively working grade lines. Gains a small bonus when entered in any competition geared toward the Working Class and a slightly larger bonus when entered into a competition revolving around their specialty.

Flaws
Obsessive Worker - Commonly seen in Tenacious barlaks (but not only them.) This barlak doesn't know when to quit. Its chance of injuring itself when participating in dangerous activities rises slightly. The higher level the trait, the worse it gets. Also, at Level II, the barlak gains a small chance to be injured in many activities that normally do not check for injury, such as ordinary races or other active working/sporting situations, because the barlak tends to throw itself so thoroughly into things that it is prone to hurting itself even under otherwise safe/normal circumstances. At Level III, the barlak becomes a real handling problem, especially if it also has any aggression issues. It doesn't want to stop working. Ever. It will go until its heart bursts - literally - if not forced to stop. This is common in Hot Blooded and Tenacious barlaks, but is also seen in calmer barlaks, especially those with a lot of devotion and desire to please their owner/trainer.

Pack Dependence - Almost always, but not necessarily, found with Pack Instinct. This barlak really isn't interested in trying to fend for itself alone, nor does it much like being alone in general. This is pretty much the opposite of Independent, and one barlak cannot have both traits; they are mutually exclusive in the same way as Long Stride and Low Rider, or High Energy and Low Energy. This barlak suffers penalties to all solo activities and competitions - it just doesn't do well when it has to make most or all decisions on its own. It is highly recommended that these barlaks be trained in Teamwork and used in for a job, sport, or show type that allows the barlak to either perform in a team with other barlaks, or else one where the trainer/handler is always present and giving orders to the barlak or otherwise exerting control over the barlak's actions. Any activity, trial, competition, or show that an Independent barlak gets bonuses for, this barlak gets equivalent penalties. At level zero, this can be overcome with sufficient training in the Independence Skill. At level I, the penalties can be heavily reduced, but not eliminated entirely. At level II, the penalties can be reduced to half original value. Also, the barlak now has a chance to become paralyzed by anxiety or indecision when forced to perform or work alone. At level III, the penalties can only be reduced by 25%, and its chance to become paralyzed when alone is high.

Thrill Seeker I - Thrill Seekers do not experience anxiety when they should. (They may or may not be anxious in other situations.) They love the sensation of pushing their body to its limits, and don’t hesitate to take risks. In fact, given a choice, a Thrill Seeker is more likely to take the risky option. The higher the level of this Flaw, the more true this is. At level III, in fact, if no risky option exists, there is a chance that the barlak will find some way to make one. And then do it. In Random Events and other choose-an-option situations, when this barlak is involved, there is a chance that it will make the decision instead of the player (and it will always choose one of the riskier options.) The higher the level of the Flaw, the more likely this is to occur. At level III, it will happen automatically unless the barlak is leashed and harnessed. Even then there will be a check to see if it gets loose somehow.
These animals also have a greater chance to be injured than usual. At level 0, this is only true for things where an injury check already existed. At level I, the check starts being made during wilderness activities of any kind as well. At level II, all activities gt an injury check. At level III, everything the barlak does (shows, Random Events, training) has an injury check - small in some cases, large in others, some in between, etc.
However, this injury risk can be countered by also having high levels of Strong Body and Quick Recovery, leading to barlaks that seem bizarrely resistant to the chaos they are continually causing.
