Description:
PFA Handler’s Commentary: “Speaking of fangiers... By coincidence, we happen to have a great male fangier prospect right now. This boy is a runaway from a ranch about fifty miles north of here. By the time he was caught, his previous owner had replaced him and didn’t want him anymore. That happens sometimes. It’s sad, but I suppose you can’t blame people after their bar has been gone for six months or more. The good news is that he survived his little jaunt in the woods and we’ve been able to get him cleaned up and rehabilitated. He’s got a crippling fear of gunfire and other sudden, loud noises, like thunder. Other than that, though, he doesn’t have any noteworthy Flaws. And he’s quite talented. You should have no trouble training him to be an excellent fangier. His energy level is very high, so he does need to do something. If you choose not to use him as a fangier, many of the same traits that make him a good herding prospect also make him a fine possible sporting bar. He isn’t particularly competitive, but he’s got oodles of energy, good precise movement, and he’s enviably nimble. Sure-footed, too. And is he ever diligent! Puts everything he’s got into executing commands. You could do a lot with this boy, to be honest, if you’re not into herding.
His looks sure are interesting, aren’t they? His coat is gray, but he isn’t greyed, so the red Clouding and those wonderful eye spots look more vibrant than one might intuitively expect. Natural grays - as opposed to greyed animals - are somewhat unusual. Other than multicolored eye spots, he doesn’t have any really rare appearance traits, but he’s still quite a handsome boy.”
Qualities
Diligence II - A diligent bar is not necessarily an obedient one. Diligence implies nothing about the barlak's willingness to attend to a trainer and obey commands (this is covered by Obedience.) However, when they are cooperating, diligent bars attend more closely than average to their trainers, and tend to perform better than average when executing commands. They are thorough and tend not to be careless or impulsive. Thus, a diligent bar is less likely to misunderstand or mis-perform an obeyed command. In game terms, they get a bonus on the randomly-rolled part of their Obedience score, reflecting their focus and precision. This bonus is cumulative with that given by Obedience. Diligent bars also have a chance to find one extra item/kill one extra prey/catch one extra fish/et cetera when they participate in a rolled activity. This chance increases with the level of the Quality.
High Energy II - Gains a small bonus to competitions and events involving a lot of physical activity, and a slightly larger bonus when entered in their specialty. Suffers a penalty when sitting still and controlling themselves for long periods of time are required, such as most shows. Obedience scores are not penalized in active competitions/events, but any time the previous penalty is in effect, the random aspect of the judging is heightened for this barlak, to represent the increased chance that the barlak's discipline will fail and it will ignore a command or otherwise act out in some minor way as an expression of boredom.
Light-Footed II - This barlak is more nimble and sure-footed than average. It may or may not be remarkably swift in a straight run, but when it comes to dodging, darting, and dealing with obstacles, this barlak has a real aptitude. This barlak gets a bonus when competing in Agility and similar sports (cross-country racing, for example) that is proportionate to the level of this Quality, and a smaller bonus when competing in or performing a rolled activity/training where this ability is an advantage (some forms of small game hunting, for example).
Natural Fangier I - The fangier is a type of herding barlak. Fangiers sometimes work alone, but are more commonly trained to work in teams with bunchers and/or flaggers. They are sometimes cross-trained with bunching skills, too. Fangiers are used with girzan and other livestock that are too stubborn and defensive against predators to be herded around by bunchers alone. Fangiers are often used alongside flaggers to move girzan, while bunchers are used for more docile livestock. Essentially, fangiers dart in to nip at the heels of the livestock - not hard enough to do real harm but sharply enough to keep the animals in motion - then duck out of the way again before the animal can kick it or strike with its horns. A Natural Fangier is born with the instinct to perform the fangier job. It still requires training to do a good job, of course, but it understands the concepts involved intuitively and will learn quickly. It does not have to become one, or even be a Working class barlak, but if it does, it gains a bonus to any activity, competition, et cetera, in which the barlak performs as a fangier. It is treated as having 2 more XP than it does per level of Natural Fangier when it comes to any Fangier skill checks. If the barlak is given general skill training as a fangier, this Quality also reduces the likelihood that that the barlak fails to learn based on the level of Natural Fangier. (1% at level 0, 2% at level I, 4% at level II, 5% at level III.)
Precision - This barlak has a high degree of control over its body and its movements are notably smoother and more precise than average. Precision is a rare example of a Quality that is favored by .Show, Sporting, and Working classes equally.
Precision is valued in show barlaks because their motion is seen as more elegant and aesthetically appealing, with Precision III commanding the most superlative praise for beauty and grace. Sporting barlaks, meanwhile, can make quicker, better moves on the field and are better at blocking the moves of other barlaks without hurting themselves or their competitors. Finally, many jobs benefit from a precise mover, but this Quality is most prized in herding barlaks, particularly bunchers and flaggers, who must move to counter and guide the moves of their livestock charges.
Barlak with Precision gain a bonus to training, activities, competitions, etc. in which this ability is an advantage. Relevant trainings reduce the chance to fail by 1% per level of Precision after 0, and add +1 XP per level of Precision after 0. At level 0, Precision does not affect training, but does affect activities and competitions, etc.
For example, Show barlaks with Precision get a bonus to the appearance/aesthetics section of judging in conformation and other Show-class events. A Barlak Frisbee player would get a bonus to its score when it competes. A buncher would get a bonus to its score in a herding trial activity. Et cetera.
Sharp Teeth I - The opposite of, and mutually exclusive to, the Blunt Teeth Flaw. This barlak has exceptionally sharp teeth. Often found in wild barlaks, but also common in hunters that have to kill prey themselves, herding bars (especially fangiers, naturally), fishing barlaks that are bred to use the dive-and-bite technique, guarding bars, and other working animals that would benefit from the trait. It is very rare in sporting animals, since having sharp teeth offers no advantage in the vast majority of barlak sports, and presents a potential added danger if the animal has aggression problems. It is practically unheard-of in Show barlaks, except for those that descend from a Working breed that was specially known for its Sharp Teeth.
The Sharp Teeth Quality gives a bonus to the CSAT with regard to the Working class - that is, the barlak is more likely to receive a Working class recommendation. When trained for a job that would benefit from sharper teeth, such as killing prey, catching fish by mouth, or being a fangier, the barlak’s chance to fail is reduced by 1% per level of the Quality (cannot reduce to 0%) and successful trainings gain 1 extra XP per level of the Quality (cannot exceed the total XP cap for trainings.) When participating in activities, competitions, and events where sharp teeth would be an advantage, the barlak gains a performance bonus, with higher levels in the Quality giving a higher bonus.
On the downside, if this barlak also has any levels in Aggression Flaws other than Food Aggression, it cannot participate in any official function (the CSAT, the BCE, training, activities, competitions, events - anything like that) until it has been equipped with one of the Muzzle items (available in the PFA Outlet shop for parapence) and it must be depicted with its muzzle on. If it has Food Aggression, it will suffer an extra penalty on the CSAT and BCE because of its sharp teeth making Food Aggression a more serious problem than it might otherwise be, since it can do more damage with a casual snap.
Flaws
Gun Shy II - This is not a gun-bred barlak. As a result, it is naturally frightened of gunfire and may also exhibit anxiety or even panic at similar loud, sudden noises, like thunder or fireworks. This Flaw can be overcome in the individual animal with sufficient training, if the owner desires, but it can still pass to offspring. This Flaw is a common one and not necessarily all that big a deal - if the barlak is not a gun or war bar, this is unlikely to come up as a major problem. Still, it is unequivocally a Flaw. For gun bars, this is a much more serious problem and can be a major fault in some cases. It won't disqualify purebreds from competing purely on the basis of conformation in the show ring, but it will severely limit their ability to do their job, whether in the field or at a trial event/competition.
