Description:

Tea is FM018's designated mate. Like all foundation barlaks, both can be bred to others, but these two were purchased as a pair directly from the Emperor of Jannphonia's personal breeding program. It's said they cost an entire fiscal year's purchasing budget, and that the local Acquisitions employees actually started a collection amongst themselves to try to fund the purchase when the Budget Director initially denied permission to buy them. In the end, he relented, and thus the PFA came to own its very first pair of genuine Jannphonian-bred Imperial Zhaientirs. (The full story can be seen on the profile of her mate, PFA King's Ransom FM018.)

This gentle, elegant barlak is not as proud as her male counterpart, and not nearly as into being the center of attention, but she nevertheless exudes an unmistakable sense of refined and regal dignity. Where her mate has a special talent for leaping and excellent focus when responding to commands, Queen is more responsive to orders in the first place, and her movement is superior to his, both the special pacing gait specifically and in terms of general grace and control. She's smarter than he is, too, and has a steady sort of confidence that sees her well through the unpredictable Zhaian courses. Tea isn't very interested in food; she will eat what she needs to survive and no more, and treats don't motivate her much, though she will accept them with a certain attitude that makes it seem as if she considers refusing a treat to be rude, and she doesn't want to be rude. In general, Queen responds better to direct, clear orders than to bribes or coaxing.

Although Tea can seem somewhat cool and distant at times, she has strong maternal instincts and does an excellent job raising her young. Although, having been bred in Jannphonia, she is accustomed to having her eggs taken from her, the PFA has found that she is an excellent mother who can be trusted to care for a clutch end-to-end, from laying to hatching. She resists the pups being taken from her if they are allowed to hatch with her, though, so the PFA usually does remove them to an incubator before hatching. Once in a while, however, she is permitted to raise a clutch up to weaning age (barlaks do not nurse, but they have a crop from which they feed their young in the wild), which seems to be good for her mental health. Once the pups are weaned, she is much more willing to allow people to take them. A solid producer, Tea lays with little apparent stress or pain, and her clutches tend to be larger than average. Fundamentally, beneath her upper class "ice queen" surface, this is a nurturing creature, unwilling to resort to violence unless given absolutely no choice. "Timid" seems like the wrong word for this physically superior, confident bitch, but it is a fact that violence has been bred out of her almost completely, and even if attacked, she would prefer to escape if at all possible rather than confronting her attacker.

With one exception, that is. If her pups or eggs are threatened. She will allow eggs to be taken by people, but predators (including people who seem to be *stealing* her eggs, or trying to hurt them, instead of the familiar and trusted people she knows will care for her eggs) she will attack ferociously, a fact that took some thieves by surprise once. She and King had just made a clutch, only their second together since coming to Vesperigo. The PFA intended to sell the pups to the public once they were hatched and their full appearance, qualities, and flaws could be shown to buyers. Tea had been reluctant to allow her eggs to be taken away after laying, so the PFA employees in charge of barlak egg management decided there was no harm in allowing her to keep the clutch for a while longer. Time went by, and the clutch hatched in her care. The employees kept a close eye on Tea and her little family, and made sure to handle and socialize the pups, but they could not be supervised 24/7. When the pups were about a week out of the shell, the PFA began advertising the upcoming fundraiser auction - "Rare breed auction! Now is your chance to obtain a perfect Imperial Zhaientir with authentic Imperial Jannphonian lines!" - which, of course, created a buzz throughout the Bay Area.

Three thieves who often "worked" together heard the news and hatched a scheme to break into the local PFA branch office to steal these rare and valuable puppies. The PFA's branch offices are not heavily guarded, so getting in was easy for three professional thieves. Unfortunately for them, they knew little about barlaks, and did not know about the trait of Parental Aggression. The thieves disabled all the security cameras they could find, but they missed one, providing invaluable evidence to the PFA (and the police). When the thieves broke into the pen, Tea was frightened and backed away at first. But then the men began snatching up her pups. They were rough. One puppy cried in fear and pain.

The man who made the puppy cry was nearly killed. All three men spent months handcuffed to their hospital beds, and it's said the most badly injured man now suffers from a severe barlak phobia.

For some mysterious reason, while the usual post-attack investigation was done, Tea has not been designated as vicious or removed from the Foundation program. The incident has been kept quiet, but like most secrets, it's now a topic of common rumor and comment throughout the Bay Area. As no one who's met Tea believes she is generally dangerous, nothing came of the incident.

Except, of course, that Tea's pups have not been touched by anyone but the Barlak Wing staff ever again.
