Four years ago, and dA's been around for at least twice that long. It's funny to compare things in internet time frames - dA has been around for quite some time.

Who'da thought that a website who's members constantly whine "dA going down the toilet" has lasted longer than some of the most popular community sites. *looking at you Myspace*

[One explanation for MySpace's decline] is that Myspace failed to innovate and stuck to a "portal strategy" of building an audience around entertainment and music, whereas Facebook and Twitter continually launched new features to improve the social-networking experience [link]
While rival Facebook focused on creating a robust platform that allowed outside developers to build new applications, Myspace built everything in-house [link]
Hmm, doesn't sound all that estranged from dA imho. dA has fumbled about with social networking tools (forever in denial that they are in fact a social network for fear of sounding like Facebook, which is apparently a bad thing). And I've been waiting for them to release a true development kit from day one, but everything on dA is, and probably will continue to be, built in-house.

Well, it all depends on your cornerstone. It seems to me every successful company needs to have a core demographic and reason for operating if they are to survive. Google has their core search service (with ads on the side bar), Home Dept sells to apartment owners who are looking for cheap quick fixes, and, imho, dA has fandoms.

When I was managing #TheList , the vast majority of submissions were for fan art groups, not to mention the accompanying group ~The-Anime-Manga-List which lists all the anime groups that #TheList doesn't. dA can say whatever they like about how they "support artists", but in reality, they're supporting the 13-18 demographic that watch TV and come online looking for fan art (personally, I came on looking for Teen Titans fan art). It's the reason there are so many references to sonic, pokemon, etc in journals. The fact dA is the first social network these kids have been on explains their poor etiquette and why there are so many journals complaining about online quarrels. I also think this is the root problem dA has in securing a steady revenue stream to grow the number of developers - their core demographic isn't actually old enough to buy the main product dA sells (subscriptions).

This gets into something I've been thinking about for some time - what a game changer Blogger may be. At one time, #teentitans was the third most popular account on dA [link] and was for-all-intents-and-purposes the HQ of that fandom's activities (at least in terms of fan art). Now #MLP-FiM is the most popular group on dA, but the real activity for the MLP fandom takes place elsewhere, on Equestrian Daily (hosted on Blogger). I queried Seth on this, he said the reason he uses Blogger (rather than dA or another site) is because it integrates well with Picasa, allows him to upload content from various sources (not just dA) and integrates well with other Google products.

I purpose that the main draw for dA is the fandom culture. However Blogger is providing better tools for the leaders of the fandom culture and users are following those leaders away from dA.

I think it's hilarious that dA has only now decided to allow videos in submissions (rather than only giving admins this privilege) [link] - something Blogger has been doing for the two years at least. Coincidentally, I actually filled a Help Desk ticket on dA asking why us mere mortals couldn't include videos in our journals. "Because it wasn't coded in to the journal system when it was first developed" - fairly obvious, but I have to wonder about dA when so much of what exists on the site can get neglected if it's not in the "first version". It makes me feel like I've put my money on the wrong horse in terms of picking a social network - when I can't say in an steady tone to my friends what network I use because none of them have ever used it, and only a few have heard of it. dA really limits itself by only targeting artists, when there are many other ways of being create that dA doesn't provide tools for. I built a robot this summer, but it's not like I can make remarks on my images pointing out the features I've included - everything has to be put in the description, and a vast majority of users skip reading the description. If I posted my work, I feel it would go over the heads of a lot of users here, a 6DOF IMU ? (8DOF if you include the planar compass), I doubt any users here have heard of that, let alone know how one works or how to interface with it - I don't feel like I'm in the community I should be here on dA. dA may not be going down the toilet, but I really don't see it going up hill.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, you should be in charge of this site. I would totally lead a dA coup d'etat to place you in power.

I appreciate the sentiment. Idk, I'm not convinced mutiny is the answer, there are definitely a few key features dA does do correctly, it's just there are a lot of moderate things that hold it back - I think of the developers being housed all over the world being one - how do you effectively communicate with someone who only shares 4 hours in common with your work schedule, let alone "bump into" someone to get a discussion going?

I look at dA and I'm reminded of Brownian motion - one step forward, three back, three forward, two back, it's like they know that they want to please their users, they just don't have a unified approach to doing so.

It seems you are having a lot of trouble with the avatar:

Also [link] can be a helpful resource if my following instructions aren't 100% clear

Here are the steps I normally take when uploading an avatar:
1) Go to the site with your avatar: [link]
2) Right right click the image and save it to your desktop (or other location where you will remember where it is)
3) Follow the link here: [link]
4) Click the "Browse" button next to the "New Avatar" box
5) Navigate to your desktop (or other location) and click your new avatar, then click "Open"
6) Click "Ok" button at the bottom of the Identity page (this should take you to your front page *Silverbondage )
7) You should see your new avatar next to your user name (unless DA is having problems; sometimes DA can take a day or so to upload the picture properly )

That's very odd, maybe it will change in a few days (I've had the same problem before where I set a new avatar, but it doesn't update for a few days, it's just a DA problem )
