Well, I got a commission to paint Tibbs and a Vespa with a bit of story...I was working on that, which I will upload here in a moment. I got a sculpting to finish but was not into it right now...I thought about starting Elijah but decided to get the painting done first...
Late shift? What kind of work do you do? Sleep tight if I don't hear from you.

wow so much to do for you XD
i should work on so many things, such as cosplay, kiriban prizes, arttrades and actually i haven't drawn anything serious in ages, only sketches and i don't even feel like i'm even still able to draw XDDD no but really when i look at my work from like 4-5 years ago, i'm like "how did i do that?? how did i even THINK of doing it like that???" OTL i should stop drawing digitally for real, and go back to traditional media.... digital drawings make it WAY too easy to get a decent pic done and all the creativity flies away... OH WELL!!
i'm a nurse in a retirement home! only one more late shift today though, then i'll be fee for a week <3

Yeah, I have enough stuff to do all the time so I never get bored.
I have been always drawing and painting without digital stuff, but as a thank you note, I started to use this muro drawing thing. I was drawing them with a regular mouse, which I got pretty good at. Then a friend got me one of those wacom tablet so I started to use those. I understand what you are saying about digital being easy, but it is a good exercise regardless especially if you don't use fancy tricks.
I have a lot of respect toward nurses. Your stock just went up pretty high in my book. Don't work too hard!!

yeah i got myself a wacom tablet to paint-chat with friends.... in the end now i almost only draw digitally, even though it annoys me XD
but on the other hand it's fun too, cause wen i draw digitally, i can at least go in a live stream, and talk to my friends while drawing and they can watch me, and make suggestions and stuff. it all has its pros and cons...
oh wow thank you XD
don't worry, i'm ok! ^^ i'm gonna have this week off anyway! XD only the last two days were a bit stressful, since i'm in the last year of my education, means i don't know [i]everything[/i] yet, but have to lead the shifts, to get a hang of it of course, and we have a new workmate in our station, who hardly knows anything at this moment, and for the last 2 days me and her were alone for late shift.. that's ok, she's doing her job just fine, but she is rather slowly of course, so i had a lot of extra work, while i gotta struggle to get my own work done.. XD

Ha I never knew you can chat while you draw... I am not into chat of any kind so I would not probably do it, but I can see that could be real fun.
Well hope you get decent rest this week. Don't forget to do some fun stuff.
So you are in some kind of internship? Haha You will be way better nurse than she ever will be, then...I did not mind working with people who are not efficient and not that skilled. I had problem with bosses who are those. I let them know what I thought of them all the time so get laid off a lot. I like working alone.

there are several paintchat-websites, like "iscribble" which is really fun and allows several people to draw on the same "sheet" at the same time! it's not only fun, but also a nice tool to sketch out projects online, when you can't meet your partners in person (like for comics or so) at least that's how i used it sometimes XD
i will do fun stuff no worries! XD and i also plan to finaly tidy up here... i'm pretty sure it's been more than 6months since i tidied this place seriously for the last time... XDD ... well.. at least i'll clean the floor and couch... my tables can stay the way they are XD
well i suppose that germany has its very own way of educating people for jobs.. usually we have to learn for 3 years, and in that time, we go to school as well as we work! so we get theoretical and practical education at the same time. and yeah like i said, i'm in my last year!
my workmate isn't a bad nurse at all, btw, but she is only an assistant. so she had only one year of education, so she for example may not handle the medications and things like that! and yeah, she is new in our station, so she doesn't really know how everything works yet. also she had her very first late shift only 4 days ago, so of course she isn't that quick yet..
well since i have my flaws as well, i like taking their hand a little you know? i know how tough it is to be new in a team and how frustrating it can be, when you get told off all the time, and not being able to defend yourself. in this state it is totally ok for her to be slowly, so i don't have any problem with her. it just means, that it was a bit more stressful than usual, but that's ok XD

Ha. That is cool. But for me drawing and studying are still solitary activity...Unless I drawing with kids. I like motivating kid to draw. Using permanent markers and draw skulls and bones on their skins.
I am somewhat of a neat freak so I clean areas all the time. Like when I am waiting for a pot of water to boil, I would start cleaning kitchen around the stove...I also hate disorganized working area. I don't want to spend time on looking for tools than working with them, you know? My cats make messes all the time so kinda evens out....
Oh I was not bagging on your co-worker. No one is efficient on the job on the first day. I am sure that your co-worker appreciate your input.
I have started to drawing 60cm tall full figure to find out how big the Elijah head needs to be...

XDDD permanent markers? XD isn't that a bit mean? not for the kids, but for the parents XD sounds fun though~
oh yeah, it depends... in an area where everyone else works, such as an office or so, i'm neat as well! i'm also very neat about my collections of books, comics, dvds and games! this stuff isnt only clean on the shelve, it's sorted after genre, author, size, alphabet and color XD
but on my couch, and floor and desk, i'm messy as fuck... and i do know where my materials are, so i don't see any reason to clean this mess, except that it looks AWFUL to intruders XDDD but yeah, my cat is the same,... she is really young, not even a year yet, and spazzes through the house batshit crazy... sometimes i find things from my bedroom somewhere in the kitchen.... and the other way round.. XD
oooh! oh my, i'm excited to see the outcome! QuQ!!

I am doing that to piss off parents most of them time. Kids love it, though. The more the parents are upset, the more funny it gets.
What! you have never mentioned you got a kitten!! You must put pictures of the kitty here.
I know what you mean, Tibbs is the youngest cat I got and he can't help knocking off anything round-shaped. I keep likes of potatoes, apples and oranges in fridge, otherwise I would find them on the floor all scared up.
I am sick of working on the current project so I might paint a cat and dick with Elijah project rest of the day, but don't hold your breath for it, young lady.

XDDD yeah i have a kitty~ it's pretty much of a coincidence i got her though! i use to have a cat who died last april at the age of 22, and to me it was clear, i NEED a new cat! i had her basically for all of my life, you know! but my mom always was like "no, i can't bear another cat, i cant replace Ini" and all this.. then like 3 months ago, Mushroom suddenly entere our house, and never left again XD so my mom couldn't really protest anymore and i'm happy with a cat <3
XD maybe i will post pics of her.. just today new glasses for my dolls arrived and i took pics of mushy wearing them XDDD
ah take your time! XD it'll be great anyway! XD

22 years? Wow! Ini had a great life, then. Cat are awesome and they make me happy.
I will be looking forward to seeing the pictures of Mushroom then.
Well Eli's head is about 8.9cm from the top of his head to his chin. I am guessing it probably should have 16mm glass eye balls.

paranoidiomatic In reply to Switchum [2013-02-26 19:20:33 +0000 UTC]
yeah i love cats~ and i love how little and energetic mushroom is! I almost forgot that, since ini of course became very lazy in her last years. But she had been more of a cuddler all her life. Mushroom is just dashing through the house and retrieving her mousy toy like a dog XDDD she only cuddles in the morning, before i stand up. But she sleeps in my bed every night XD and hardly ever leaves my side... she doesn't want to be alone in a room, but she also doesn't want to be too close to me, when there's still the possibility to dash around XD
16mm sounds good for a 60cm doll, but most dolls have a rather manga-ish look so the eyes are rather big. if you are aiming for a realistic style, maybe smaller eyes would be better i think.. ... on the other hand eli's eyes are indeed huge XD

Switchum In reply to paranoidiomatic [2013-02-26 22:11:39 +0000 UTC]
I guess that should explain why you have been watching my work. Kitten are always energetic. When I got Kitty Meow was always following me and all. Now he is a middle aged cat, he likes to be left alone and sleep a lot. He does come to my desk and meows and begs for attention every once in a few hours, though. He can still jump as high as he used to so I am not complaining.
Tibbs and Squeak gets under the cover with me but Tibbs often press his butt against my face so I tend to get up with his stinky butt next my face.
As for the eye balls, everyone has got big eye balls -they fill the eye sockets of a skull, you know.. some of them just don't show eyes as much as Eli, I guess.
I have started to block out the head. A question. how big is the hole for the neck?
I might be able to send work in progress pictures to you tomorrow.

oh no, actually i started watching you before all the kitty statues XD
I guess the thing that got me watching you, was the planet of the apes statue.. not sure though XD
XDDD cats are awesome..! mushroom tends to bite me a lot... she grabs my arm or my foot really gently without her claws and the bites and noms.. XD
yeah i know, but the glass eyes do have rather big irises, so pretty much the whole eye will be filled with iris then XD these eyes aren't made anatomically correct, but in a size that works well with the dolls.. [link] this doll here for example has a more realistic sculpt, and wears 12mm eyes! and it's a 70cm doll btw XD just saying~
the neckhole should be 3,5cm diameter.. that should work with pretty much any dollbody then

Ha! I would not have guessed the Ape would got you watch my works... Many started to watch me after the cake topper thing...
The Ape will be a kit soon. I am supposed to get a few copies of it.
Tibbs does that a lot. He would start bite harder if I tickle him. Never hard enough to break the skin but pretty hard. He is kinda of a dick.
Ha, I would not have known those doll eyes are anatomically incorrect. Thanks for telling me. I will consider 12mm.
Okey Dokey 3.5cm for the neck. Got it.
Thanks

Yeah I did those for a GK company in NY. I pitch them what I want to sculpt time to time they always reject my suggestions. Gotta be able to sell enough numbers I guess.
Tibbs also likes to kick. I should make a video of him...
This is what I got so far. I noticed that his got his right side of mouth bit higher than the left. [link]
I put bit of texture for eyebrows for now so that I can see where I am at, but I figured people like to draw brows on so I would smooth out at the end.
I got a lot more to go but thought I would show you the progress.

><'' that sucks.. i really like them.. but usually the things i like aren't those everyone else likes, so yeah.. i'm never lucky in finding figures i want, cuz the series/movie/game/character is unpopular or not popular anymore.. same with my own drawings and photos.. stuff i really really like hardly gets any attention, while things i view as random and boring myself, seem to wander all across the internet...
XD yeah maybe you should XD
wow that's really cool! yeah i love WIP-pictures~ dump them all on meee!!
... i should sculpt too... i really like sculpting, but it always makes such a mess.. ><'' this stuff looks really smooth though.. so far i only sculpted with clay and fimo and paperclay.. all three had a rather rough surface.. :/

When they made me sculpt Mad Max, I told them I would do it if they let me sculpt Jim Goose to go with it. I personally liked Jim Goose much better since I am a motorcycle nut. I even had a same model of the bike was used in the movie one point. The did not want to go for it. After explaining the popularity of the character outside of the US, they finally went for it. I know the Goose figure sold a lot more than Max over seas. Also no one ever made decent figure of the character before.
GK industry started out producing ever minor/ cult characters from movies/TV and comics because no major toy company would make figures of them. But they got tendency to do popular characters to make money now. I see the same characters being made over and over. (Mad Max had been done by 6-7 times by various companies...)Besides, some toy companies like Sideshow started to produce small run cult character figures so GK industry is dying. You know Volks was a GK company when they got started? I think they made a smart move to start BJD. I am trying to do the same now with help of yours.
What kinda characters you like but can't find figures for?
Glad you liking the head so far. I would like to make it realistic certain point but I understand that I might have to doll it up for better sales...so please feel free to give me advice of any kind regarding this piece.
As for smoothing, I spend more time on cleaning the surface than actual sculpting. There seem to be no easy way for it...

oh i never knew that! but it's like that with most companies, not only toys... many companies start out to make cheap quality stuff or stuff for only a minority of people (for example doc martens) and suddenly they get more expensive, make more stuff for the masses and that's pretty annoying.. i can see, that they need finance themselves too, but i hate when they start selling their ideals, and what their original fans/consumers liked them for...
oh i can't really name anything just like that XD depends a lot on my current fandom.. but i usually am into side-characters.. mh well for example right now i'm playing final fantasy 9 again. my fave character always has been Blank. But i never found any merch on him..
It's a bad example cause i'm not looking desperatly for a figure of this character, but yeah.. XD you get the idea..

yes i really loved the series.. i pretty much played all of them, but the last one i really liked was ff9.. 10 was good gameplaywise, but i hated this loveydovey story... everything afterwards only had great looks, but the stories were way too short and boring and there hardly were any sidequests and minigames.. like i loved the cardgames, gold saucer and blitzball.. XD
but yeah i found some cosplays as well XD but i can cosplay myself XD mh, i love merch you know. like posters and figures and plushies and all this.. XD especially figures.. I love to have a 3 dimensional copy of your favourite character .. maybe this fascination was, what got me into BJDs..
Do you know homestuck? This webcomic with the gray, horned trolls? I'm really into it, and since it's only a webcomic, there's hardly any merch, except calendars and books, so i made a keyring and a plush myself XDDD (which is to be found in my gallery fanart -> homestuck.. ) i love carrying my fandoms around~

I think my buddy's fave was FF9 as well. I think very next one was something to do with FF9? I am not sure. I got him PS3 for Christmas so that he can play current Final Fantasy, but we ended up playing GTA Lost and Damned instead. We are both motorcycle enthusiasts...
So what is your fave characters that got you in BJD?
I have never heard of Homestuck, otherwise I would have drawn a cat something to do it for you. If you get me some kinda a link and indication of which character, I might be able to do a figure for you.
Thanks for the compliment. Since I stare at it for long time, I kinda lost sense of how am I doing. So I can't tell if it looks like Elijah or not right now.
I only got 3.8cm diameter or 3.2cm diameter ball for the neck...You think you can show me the link of how they make the neck joint part? or picture of the head from the bottom? I know I have to cut the head in the half so that it can be cast hollow in order to put doll eyes.
Oh should I post the pic to the BJD club here to get some feedback?
I appreciate your help.

oooh, i love GTA XD on my ps3 i mostly play assassin's creed and gta/red dead redemption XD still my favourite GTA is vice city! I can't say why, i just loved it! and it's actually the only GTA i finished!
i don't have any characters in BJD..? I know many people make "cosplays" for their dolls, but mine are just OCs.. i don't plan much on them, i just work with the sculpt, you know? like i make a face up that fits the sculpt, i get a wig that fits the face up and i get clothes, that i think this "character" would wear.. everything pretty spontaneous~
oh you never heard of it?? many people don't like it, cause of the hype around it, but i thought most know it XD [link] this is the website, where you can read it, but it has almost 8000 pages by now XD Though i think you might like it.. The humour ranges from very subtle to overly silly. Also the author pretty much knows every movie ever filmed.. i guess he and his game/movie collection are very close to tarantino's movie/music collection... and i love all the references he makes, when he's making fun of everything out there and makes his comic look like a 16bit game. I'm a big fan... XD my fave character in this is tavros.. [link] there's a wiki for every character and i guess even the places in this comic XD
oh i think you're doing great! but if you want my help~
i dunno how much more you worked on it since yesterday, but i think maybe the nose is a bit too big? i guess his actual nose is pointier and his chin slightly smaller. He's not really a manly guy is he? XD maybe take a break, and then work on it again? i know how that goes, you get this crooked view on everything, when you work on it for too long..
[link] maybe this is helpful for you? i couldn't find a pic from the bottom, and actually i don't really want to destring my dolls, because restringing them is hell of a lot of work.. maybe here [link] you can see, how the joints work, even though this is an arm or leg or i dunno, but yeah.. there are s-shaped hooks at the end of the strings (which means in the head, the hands and feet) to keep everything together. that's why the hole in the neck usually isn't completely round, but long and most of them have little notches where the s-hook can rest, after the doll is stringed.
hope this stuff will help you! ^^

I have never played Assassin's creed. I worked on the accessories for the action figure, though. I liked Vice City. Mainly because it was the first one that let you ride motorcycles. I like 80's feeling as well.
I could not really get into homestuck from just visiting a few pages. I will read some more to see if I like it. BY the way, did you ever watch a show called Gilmore Girls? I know it was dubbed and aired in Germany.
Pointer nose and smaller chin huh? I will adjust them accordingly. By the way I found some head sculpt of Elijah during the research. They looked off to me. [link] [link] Funny that first one has thicker nose and thicker chin. Maybe people see him having thicker chin and nose? I see him having wider jaw more. Thanks for the input.
Those pictures help actually. Thanks. I understand you don't want to take your own doll apart. I always enjoyed taking stuff apart to find out how the things works. But there were a few times that I could not put them back properly...
Maybe they have shop manual for BDJ like motorcycles...1

yeah i liked the 80's feeling~ I also liked the characters, it was overall realy funny! GTA basically is funny no matter which part, but this was .. different XD and BRIGHT! damn was this game bright!
Yeah of course, homestuck is HUGE.. it took me around three months to read it, when i started, and back then it only 6000 pages...
Yeah i do know Gilmore Girls, but I never was really into it... Even though the relationship between those two reminded me of my own relationship with my mom XD But it was overall too girly for me...
omg! XD that first picture has a beautiful facepaint, but that nose!! omg XDD
After you sent me your wip-pics, I did some research and analyzed his face XD so i think he does have a rather pointy nose, but he also has a slight bump in the back of his nose.. about the wide jar you're totally right! his jawbones are kinda edgy/pointy too.. ..i really like analyzing faces XDDD in the second sculpt btw, i think the face is too small compared to the head itself... but i think they did a good job on the nose though, while the first sculpt did great on his eyes..
well i am able to put them back together, since i had to put them together as well, after i had them delivered. But that's somehow exhausting and my hands hurt for hours after stringing the head on... destringing arms or hands is ok, but the head holds everything together, so the strings have to be very tight... sorry bout that ^^'

I am a fan of Gilmore Girls. I have seen every episode of it. There are many reference that you don't get right away. It was a smart show. Not to mention those ladies were very easy on eyes.
The paint job was good on the first one yes. Horrible paint job can ruin the sculpt very easily.
There are many 1/6 head sculpts that challenged likeness of actors. It is funny that they look totally different by the sculptor but you can still recognize the actor. I guess it is depending on how the sculptor interpret the actor/character. Kinda like drawing a cartoon version of the actor I guess.
I am gonna take a break from the head today. I think I am gonna paint a kitty instead

heyhey, sorry i didn't answer for so long.. i spent the weekend with some friends and was on a little convention yesterday! ^^
that's true, but that's why i dislike many sculpts.. i like the sculpt of an actor to actually look like the actor you know? I mean, when i buy something like this, i want it to lok like the character/person i am told i was buying here and not some caricature.. i've been collecting statues and action figures for 13 years now, and they all look recognizable of course, but there are some, i look at and think "man, if I see this head is kinda crooked.. why didn't the sculptor see it? or at least the company" since it is true that, when you look at a painting/sculpt/even cosplay for too long, you don't really see the differenc anymore..
did you go on a little with the head on the weekend? ouo

That's fine young lady. Hope you had awesome time there.
As for the likeness of actors and such, sculptors that toy makers hire actually do pretty good. But during the process of manufacturing, it gets screwed up a lot. Also the fast paint job doesn't compliment the sculpt, either. You know, you see the proto type of the figure in the picture and think it is real good, then you get disappointed when you see the actual product, being looking nothing like the prototype...
That being said, I know there are many head sculpts that bit off or sometimes quite bit inaccurate. As far as I know, a handful of company likes of Hot toys, Enter bay do pretty decent job on likeness. Of course they are pricey...
I worked on the head little bit. What is the diameter of the ball at the head? I am using 3.2cm diameter wooden ball for it now. How thick is the wall of the head? I have been looking through many pictures of SD 1/3 size figures but can't really figure out. I found a blog that a lady is hand building a whole doll by herself.[link] It is educational but did not really help my situation. I hate to sculpt a head that doesn't really fit or look right on the body, you know? I am also looking at this figure [link] and start thinking the head I am working on might be too big... Any thoughts?
I will send you in-progress pic sometime today if I don't get distracted too much.
