I am not familiar with ball jointed dolls. How big are those? Do you ever customize the facial structure? Just curious.

paranoidiomatic In reply to Switchum [2013-02-17 14:52:40 +0000 UTC]
XD oooh well this one is 60cm tall, but this depends from model to model.. ( i have only sd-dolls though, which are between 60 and 70cm, or else the proportions between them would look to weird in group-pics)
you can't customize their faces really, you can influence their expressions a lot though by different "faceups" which is just a short term for the paint on their faces, and by the placement of their eyes (they have glass eyes, you can open the back of their heads and reach inside to change the eyes or the direction they look at) also different angles often kinda create different expressions, depending on the sculpt. but that's something to experiment with XD
since these dolls are meant to be customized (it even costs an extra fee to have their faces prepainted by the company) you can put a hundred of the same sculpt next to each other, but none would look exactly the same.
*spam over XD

60cm-70cm is freaking huge to me. You have a lot of space in your house?
I am sure that you can put epoxy putty of some sort to change face or at least expression on the doll. I might get a head part of it and play with it. I I guess they can be quite different with faceup/makeup just like any women do. Thanks for the info. Oh, which companies' and which model is most commonly collected?

paranoidiomatic In reply to Switchum [2013-02-17 20:18:55 +0000 UTC]
XD yeah those are pretty much the tallest you can get.. the smallest are only 26cm though..
well i keep them all in my room, which is indeed very big, but so stuffed, i couldn't say i have lots of space XD
yes some people do that, they don't necessarily change the dolls facial expression with epoxy, but for example sculpt elven ears for them or scars or stuff like that...
but i gotta tel you, these doll are very expensive.. an sd-head (without body) costs around 120-130$ at least... unless you find a really really cheap company.. so i dunno if it's really worth to buy one, just for experimenting XD
uhm i guess the most popular company is dollzone! i see many many people with a dollzone mo, but i don't really like that model, he looks TOO anime in my eyes.. Migidoll Jina seems to get very popular too these days, and i already ordered one, cause i really love this sculpt~
but there are manymanymany companies and even more tiny one-man companies, who only accept commissions like every 6 months.. (for example Ninodoll, where this doll here comes from)

26cm is still big in my book. I got into sculpting with 1/35 scale figure, which is about 5cm tall.
Well, I guess people are afraid to do the customization if the head is gonna cost that much. Maybe I can get a measurement of it and sculpt whole thing from the scratch.
I did some research on the dolls you have mentioned. I can see some ladies really get into it. Many of the pictures of the doll reminded me of personal blog of young ladies who photograph themselves in dark fragile looking atmosphere. They seem to utilize similar make-up method.
What kind of material they use to have final head made?

paranoidiomatic In reply to Switchum [2013-02-19 15:41:54 +0000 UTC]
yeah of course it's still rather big, but you gotta keep in mind they are all fully jointed with strings, so of course they gotta be a certain size XD also i love how big they actually are, that makes it also easier to find everyday-items which might match their scale XD
yeah i think so too.. but also most people are really doll-lovers and if they spend money on a doll (like me) it's usually the perfect sculpt. a sculpt that does not need any changes except things like elven ears or whatever shit people do XD
the material they are made of is usually resin!
yeah most people do this oh-so dark thing.. all those long haired gay gothic vampires most people turn their dolls into were actually the reason why i took so long until i got myself a doll.. i liked these dolls from the very beginning, but i since i had zero-to-none experience i was like "but i don't want THIS..." i like more happy depictions of them. dorky carefree idiocy paired with awesome looks, that's what BJDs are for me! XD

Well some of 1/6 figures are pretty amazing in articulation. Likes of Hot toys. However if you pose the figure too many times, the joint tend to get broken, though. As far as I know, 1/6 scale is pretty popular so you can find all kinds of accessories for them.
I did some more research and learned that one of garage kit companies in Japan is producing SD series. Garage kit utilizes polyurethane resin to start with and itself is kind of dying hobby so I can see them expanding their biz to BJD market.
I was thinking about sculpting the head that could go with some of popular doll series. If you have any ideas (like young Ed Furlong head for your BJD?) I should tackle, let me know.

I would probably go for American History X. What is the diameter of the ball in the neck and approx size of the head from one of your male dolls? I am not promising anything, but I might play with it in my free time.

paranoidiomatic In reply to Switchum [2013-02-19 17:45:07 +0000 UTC]
well the SD-headsize is 8-9 inches around the head
neck size is 4 inches usually ^^
would you also go for glass eyes? they are available in all sizes from 6 to 20mm or so XD so i'm sure you'd find the right size for your head!
i'm sure this would come out great! you definitely gotta show me, if you happen to make it!

Switchum In reply to paranoidiomatic [2013-02-20 01:36:09 +0000 UTC]
Thanks for the info. I will play with the size some point. so if you use caliper the head from front is about 5-6cm wide? side is about 7-8cm?
As for the glass eyes, I probably not going to mess with them. I might make the head hollow so that it will be able to house the glass doll eyes?

paranoidiomatic In reply to Switchum [2013-02-20 07:10:23 +0000 UTC]
yes that's about the size! but uhm, maybe you should be aware, that those heads are usually rather big and mangastylish.. so if you go for a realistic look, i guess it'd be ok, if you made it slightly smaller ^^' but that's up to you! XD

OKay. I will do some research before I ever start. I just went to Volks USA website. Holy crap those figures are expensive!! I have never been a figure/doll collector. I am glad I was not one. I can't afford to be one....I think I will sculpt the head in the proportion with 60cm overall height. That should work right? What other movie actors you think desirable in this project?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
paranoidiomatic In reply to Switchum [2013-02-20 11:49:20 +0000 UTC]
i told you they are expensive! XD
but yeah, that should work! ^^
other movie actors.. hm.. mark hamill would be cool! XD joseph gordon-levitt.. this guy who played rufio in "hook".. i'm just naming random actors i like and which i think would fit in that regular doll-picture XD oh, i guess elijah wood with his huge eyes would make a good doll too XD
but if you make the, you should be able to reproduce them, i think this might be something many doll-collectors would like..!

Switchum In reply to paranoidiomatic [2013-02-20 12:02:51 +0000 UTC]
Yeah.. They are charging the price like individual customizers would charge...I could see Elijah Wood and Gordon-Levitt being the doll since are popular among ladies.
You know, Reproducing is the main reason to do this. I got a mold maker in NY to do the casting work for me. Sad to say, I am not making much money on my kitty stuff right now. Want to make some money tide me over.... So which actor I should consider first to kick start this project? I will do Ed Furlong someday just for you, though.

paranoidiomatic In reply to Switchum [2013-02-20 12:13:27 +0000 UTC]
oh that's cool! so you could really start a doll-maker career~
mh personally i'd prefer gordon-levitt to be honest XD
but maybe as a start i think wood might be easier to do, cuz his face is more recognizable in my eyes.. i also just thought robert downey jr might be very nice as well...
awww~ it's so nice you want to make ed only for me~ <3 on the other hand it reminds me of how sad it is, that only a handful of people even remember him.. but i'm looking forward to your sculpt! actually i've just been spazzing around the house over this thought XD
i can see how it is.. your kitties are damn cute and i love the detail you put into them.. but yeah.. hard to make money on those i guess...

I don't know if I want to be a doll maker. Sounds creepy since I am a single guy living with 3 cats.
I agree on Elijah. There should be enough demand for his head.
I should start collecting reference pics.
Ed was really a hot item after the T2 and he kinda screwed it up. Just like Corey Heim, or any other child actors did.
I am sure I can make okay money on kitties but not good at marketing myself... Besides, those cat lovers can spend money on real kitties, you know? I know those doll people have forums for it and go completely nuts about that. So easier target.

XDDD i see your point.. yet these doll-heads can be sold rather expensive, so maybe it'd be worth it XD
yeah he did screw up majorly... oh well, at least there are some nice movies to emember the good days XD
that's true.. doll people are weirdos.. and i must know it, i'm a doll-person myself! XD one fact about doll-people: one doll never is enough! it's not like they say "oh well i have one or two dolls now, that's good" they end up having like 30 dolls in an extra doll-room.. XD and the good thing for you is: they of course keep taking pics of their dolls and usually credit the company (in that case: you!) and so more people will see them and maybe want one themselves!
if the dolls are pretty or special enough, they dont really need any marketing..

I am counting on you to guide me about this project since I have no desire to belong to those doll related forums or some secret society of it....
So doll collecting is like tattoos? Some addiction? although a commercial sculptor who sculpts collectibles, I don't collect anything....30 dolls? That would be more than the price of brad new passenger car...That is crazy....
Yeah that would be nice to get a reputation in the doll hobby community. All I gotta do is sculpt decent conversion head for the dolls. Then words of mouth might get me somewhere....

XD well i do know people who really own that many dolls.. i personally own 5.. and two of them i just bought this week, and they're gonna arrive within the next 4 weeks.. XD but i don't want my pack to grow too big.. i would neglect some of them and also grouppics would look just stupid... i'm also only buying sculpts i REALLY want XD unlike some others XD

I did some research and pulled some images of Elijah. I am gonna try to sculpt him in neutral facial expression, but might put bit of frown to it. He does that a lot. Did you know he was in "Back to the Future 2"?
There are many many reports on dolls possessed by some kind of entity. There is a famous doll in Japan that its hair grows like a human. [link] I am not religious at all, but I do believe there is something to it.

and no i didn't know! he should have been pretty little in that movie..?
yeah i know that certain doll, and i actually do believe that! XD you know when she was round my age, some poltergeist clung to my mom, so i have every reason to believe all this, but yeah.. my mind likes to focus on things that "make sense" .. so yeah.. i guess i can say i'm pretty agnostic bout all kinds of supernatural stuff
the only thing i never will believe is the image of some sort of god, as in creating and "leading" this world and its inhabitants...

Talking about Christianity? I gotta say I can't related to the religion and fans of Jesus. I don't want to bag on other people's religion but there are some crazy stuff in bible, people decided to ignore.... I seriously have problem with their belief that non-believers will go to hell regardless of charity the person given, or contribution to society. What a narrow-minded club....Jesus is just a philosopher to me. A shitier one than Socrates in my opinion.

Yeah The Westboro Baptist church is in Kansas where I live. An abortion doctor got murdered in my town a few years back. Some of them are not much different than crazy radical Muslims that planting roadside bombs. From Europe's point of view, don't you think Republicans of the US sound very stupid? yeah that's true, i more tried to aim at the stupidity of not allowing catholics to marry and shit... it's like breeding their own little rapists in that church. in france there's an abbey where hundreds of baby skeletons were found under the whole place. cause christian priests are sick enough to kill the babies, they had with the nuns, just to hide their religion's failure...
actually i think it's quite amusing how churches developed to begin with XD the first abbeys were started by complete outsiders, you could even say rebels, who thought studying (the bible but also medicine and science and stuff) was more important than obeying to the society rules of having a family and trying to make money. so it is kinda interesting how nowadays the church presses their priests and monks and nuns into these "laws" which people back then just made up for themselves to have their heads free for studying XD
call me an asshole, but i will forever laugh at religions...

I know that you mean, but they are not gonna change their mind although there are some nuns gave up believing Christianity in this country. You have to remember that some people are totally lost without their religion.
You should visit Kansas. You will laugh your ass off. I will take you to The creationism museum. They seriously believe that human population had started with Adam and Eve. Even I knew it was just an allegory when I first heard it at the age of 6. There are some people wanted Atheists to be registered like convicted sex offenders. They believe that athiests have no moral and ethics since they don't believe in god and hell.
