Description This is pretty far from my usual cheery pieces. I've been wanting to make this for a long time, and when I saw *oblivionhaze's Chaos and Absurdity contest [link] , I decided to go for it.

My entire life, I have been plagued by what I call "tornado dreams" whenever life has gotten stressful or chaotic. The dreams vary--sometimes there's a storm and merely a mention of the possibility of a tornado, sometimes a tornado (or tornados) are seen in the distance, sometimes I end up inside the tornado, and others the tornado hits me but I don't see it since I'm in some sort of shelter. But what they all have in common is tornados.

I chose to do this particular piece because it's more than just a random tornado; it's one that has targeted you. The pipe has your name on it as it's slingshotted from the tornado and toward you. The pipe's assault is unavoidable. It's to give the viewer a sense of my experience. A sense of the fear I feel as my life is swirling around me, out of control.

This is also my 23rd deviation for the 100 Theme Challenge. ([link] ) ...The theme for this piece is "In the Storm"--Variation 1, Theme 96.

Soft pastels on mixed media paper; 2011.

i've had tornado dreams too, a couple. one where i was in a house and the tornado ripped the roof off and everything then sucked me up too. and even more dreams on the theme of 'unavoidable'... like i'm walking along a railroad track then it turns into a railroad bridge, then the bridge is out. or the one i had yesterday, going down a flight of stairs from way up high but the staircase is falling apart, i realize the stretch ahead of me will never support my weight and the whole thing is going to collapse. so i turned to the right and jumped off onto some other structure. sometimes i don't make it though. very nice image, thanks for the descriptive story too

Oh man, so sorry I'm so late in replying to your comment. Those dreams sound very terrifying, for sure.

i get on this (and just about every) site less frequently than i would like... computer's been down two weeks this time. Β then i hooked it up yesterday and it took another day to get the internet working right... Β  Β business as usual. Β they were actually fun dreams, i love action adventure dreams. Β would be scary if real, no doubt, but hey it was a dream!

Wow, this is so incredible! Your personality really comes out in your works. This is so truly expressive, emotional, and real that I'd say it's one of the best works that I've seen on here. You did a wonderful job creating depth in this piece, in more than one way.

that is how i feel about certain things in my life, no matter what you do, no matter how far you run from something it is always there ready to strike. meeting a problem or situation head on is so difficult and this feels like i am backed up against a wall. i will challenge it. very thought provoking, love it!!!!

I'm sorry that you can relate to such a frustrating concept :-/ ...but I like your attitude! You can totally challenge it

i like that people have different reactions to your art. not much that i come across can actually make you sit and think.

Wow, that's quite a compliment--I didn't realize my art could make people sit and think like that. Thanks so much!! And yeah, the different reactions are one of the reasons I love deviantArt so much...it gives me the chance to see what different people think of a particular piece, and often times a piece ends up evoking things that I didn't even think of! Or at the very least, I see many more nuanced views of it from people.

Aw, that would be super awesome! Just beware that unlike this piece, I typically use a TON of in-your-face color. Just thought you should be warned, lol.

Aw, the best way to get more confident with color is to practice!

I'm so ashamed! You've just mentioned for one of my piece that you love it, and them you put me in front of this, to tell you how much I hate it?! OMG, you've got such a huge power to express the precise emotion, I've rarely met. In the most absurd manner, I just started to evaluate distance from pipe to tornado chaos, rugosity and smooth (!) surface of the pipe exterior, aspect of tornado turns, all chaotic atmosphere around, etc .... and true, it's an unavoidable chaos, but your targets will definitely always fight against
Amazing artwork, great artist!

Wow, thank you so much!! Conveying emotion through artwork is something I rarely try, because I think it's such a difficult thing to do--so I'm so glad the emotion comes across so strongly! That means my efforts were worthwhile

Ohh myy. I simply loved the surrealist view on this one and faved it right away I didnt see the description It makes a lot more sense too. I tend to lucid dream and sometimes they take me thru a whirlwind of emotions. This couldnt have been more apt for the contest

I'm glad you can relate Dreams are certainly powerful with the emotions they can evoke. Especially when they tap into things one is already feeling/experiencing in real life.
And I'm glad this fits what the contest is looking for! I was a bit unsure, as I felt I focused more on the chaos aspect than the absurdity.

oblivionhaze In reply to PassionIsLife [2011-10-19 18:46:18 +0000 UTC]

Exactly. And dreams tend to magnify and even throw in some crazy visuals to depict our current state of mind And well, thats the thing with absurdity. It doesn't have to tie. I was told to add another title to make it broader and a bit easier. Chaos is almost abstract so absurdity can be something a bit more concrete But dont you worry, this is a win from my side

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PassionIsLife In reply to oblivionhaze [2011-10-19 18:51:19 +0000 UTC]

Oh that's so true, how dreams magnify our current state. It's actually kind of funny that this piece grabbed you for it's surreal feel, because I wasn't actually intending for it to be surreal...but then, I guess that's how dreams work. If they're surreal, then it makes sense that the depiction of one would be surreal as well. Anyway, wow, that's awesome that you like it so much!! Just knowing that makes my day, regardless of how the contest turns out This is actually the second time I've tried depicting my tornado dreams over the years, so it's such a relief to see that this time has been more of a success than my first try.

Well, In a way when I see art I forget a bit of the artist is vested in it. If I look at it on a stand alone basis it seems very surreal, the pipe and the hurricane. I guess dreams have that effect And that I liked it even before seeing it was for the contest definitely has to say something Im glad I made your day I wish my depictions were this much fun My dream depictions would probably be photoshopping random unrelated things together, and throwing black paint on em
