Having joined the military at a young age, Max was deemed to be best suited as a combat pilot. As he worked his way through the ranks, the military found his skills suitable for field tests of new aircraft, leading to the development of combat aircraft without a cargo bay, who were solely devoted to delivering ordnance onto a target. Initially, these smaller aircraft were met with skepticism through the longstanding doctrine of equipment that can fulfill every role to some degree. However, Max's ability to use these dedicated weapons platforms made him the pilot with the highest kill count of Grimm and other threats in the kingdom's history, earning him the title of Vermillion Viscount.

Due to his 25+-year service record, the Colonel has accrued many accolades, including a Silver Sword for soloing a Category 4 Grimm of previously-unseen type. It is occurrences like this that make him worry that his nephew, who is attending Shade Academy, would throw himself into an unwinnable battle to live up to his relative's name.

One of the things on his bucket list before retiring at the age of 50 is to find and fight the upstart known as the Night Witch, just to see if the legends are true.
