Dodge/Burn.....Which one shades and which one just fucks up your pic?

When you shade and shade over it, it leaves this horrid line! D:

Dodge is the one that lightens the area, burning is making it darker.
After I use dodge/burn, I always smudge it. remember to have what you want shaded selected >.>
Soemtimes, I even have the fuzzy paint brush so I don't need to smudge it.
Well, I do, but it would be less work O3O
