Description: The most widely distributed members of the otter subfamily of the mustelid family, which the Eurasian river otter is native to most parts of Eurasia, which this otter is common, but listed as Endangered species in some parts of its range. The vocalizations of the common otter include a high-pitched whistle between a female and her cubs, twittering noises produced during play-fighting and cat-like noises when fighting. For most parts that they are solitary and territorial, except for a bond between mother and pups. Hunting mainly takes place at night, while the day is usually spent in the Eurasian otter's holt (den) – usually a burrow or hollow tree on the riverbank which can sometimes only be entered from under water. Though long thought to hunt using sight and touch only, evidence is emerging that they may also be able to smell underwater - similar manners to a star-nosed mole.
