Description
In case you were ever curious about the process by which I make bases. PXThe first step thar, is the initial sketch... and PEE YEW is it UGLY! But I have the basic pose down that I want, with the basic attitude I wanna portray. You can see that the main focus is on his hips. Also, pretty much everything is disproportionate and freakish looking. LOL.
Next step, unfortunately, couldn't find anything between the first and this one, and it probably looks like there was a whole hell of a lot more time spent turning that monster into this than I actually spent on it. My initial sketch usually gets stretched and skewed and torn apart until I'm satisfied with the basic shapes and anatomy. Then, I'll go over it with a much finer sketching like you see here. I also threw on his head since he was supposed to be another base in my Avatar inspired base set.
Third step, I messed around with the length of his arms, and other proportions because they didn't look right to me. In step two, his forearms were short and silly looking. PX As you can see, even though I've refined my initial sketch almost down to flat-out lineart, I STILL pull it apart and put it back together until I'm REALLY satisfied.
I've started making the lineart a 1-px length line, up by the shoulders. I've also messed around a bit more with the pose so that his shoulders made more sense, as well as portrayed a little more of the personality I wanted to portray. I also re-drew his hands and moved his arms so that they looked right to me.
Between the fourth step and this one, I've finished up the outline and attached his head forreals to his body. As far as edits go, I made his legs a bit more substantial because his legs thus far had been a bit too far on the skinny side. Also fooled around with his arms EVEN MORE because they were too stick-like and I wanted to define the shapes a bit more. This is particularly noticeable in his farthest arm, which was just cylindrical in the previous step but shows natural curving lines in this one.
This was the last step before I would have logically shaded this base! In this one, the main differences from the last step is that I moved his neck and head towards his farthest arm a few pixels because it looked off-center before and I also gave him nipples and a bellybutton, which I usually wait to add right before I go to shade (these little features actually help me out when I shade the torso).
OK, well I hope that was... interesting and/or insightful for you! PX
Of course, this isn't EXACTLY the way I make bases every time. Sometimes I will simply skip the refined sketch lines and flat out outline my initial sketch after I mutilate it. Sometimes, I do the lineart too early and then have to proceed to mutilate the lineart for a few hours before I'm happy. I suppose it all depends on how exact that first sketch is, and considering this one's initial sketch is SO SO messy, I logically couldn't even BEGIN to outline that!!
