Wow, that's amazing, to own such a piece of history with personal connections to it... And that has to be worth a lot! Though who would sell it!?
I'm very envious. Damn you.
Oh, and I found out the militaria fair I mentioned was on a few days ago, so I went and picked up a couple of things including a gas mask and canister like yours. I'll put photos up when I can.

Yah its cool, I wonder who its original owner was? Ill hold onto it and aventualy pass it on to my future children, hope they dont sell it lol.
Cool, those canisters and masks are great. The look of those canisters are just as synonymous with the German soldier as their helmets or weapons.

Someone of high rank I presume, to own that! And you'll have to leave a note with it saying "Do NOT sell"
Yeah, definitely. The one I got's slightly different in that it's post-war, but I'm still after a Nazi mask!

Yah whats realy cool about it is that its SA so thats like pre SS or before the SS meant anything. I wonder if the guy ever thought it would end up in some ones house in the United States lol.
Dose the canister have a date on it?

Haha, I doubt it, they were preparing for the 'Thousand Year Reich'... so much for that.
No, but I did some research and the mask is a GM-54, issued in the year that makes up the name. It's basically the next model after yours.
