Le premier château de Châtelard a été construit au XIème siècle et était autrefois désigné "Fort dans le bois" en raison de son emplacement. Ce premier château n'avait pas été construit puissant, c'est pourquoi il a été détruit par des batailles.
La construction du nouveau château avait commencé en 1441 et s'acheva en deux ans seulement.
Il était habité par des barons et servait de centre du pouvoir sur les territoires proches. Le pape Félix V avait l'habitude d'y passer du temps.

Au cours des siècles suivants, le château avait été reconstruit et avait changé de forme à maintes reprises jusqu'à la structure actuelle.
Le château a ouvert ses portes aux touristes qui veulent revivre son histoire et se sentir comme au Moyen Âge
