Where do I even start with this one?
First of all I find it insane that something like Applied Behaviour Analysis is still being practiced today.
I think that all children must be well behaved and respectful towards everybody all the time,
but even my cold logic does not justify the absurd methods used in ABA.
What they aim to achieve is basically exorcising autism from children by constantly monitoring and
"correcting" their behaviour by physical means in a stick-and-carrot sort of way.
This thought alone is enough to send anybody nuts, but for autistic people like me, for whom
every social situation is some degree of stressful, ABA can be and is a real torture.
It baffles me that prisoners' rights receive more media coverage than ABA.
Is this the way it's supposed to be? Are we the wrongdoers? Do we owe blind obedience to the neurotypicals?
Do we deserve being systematically brainwashed for the benefit of the ego of some therapist?
Becasuse no one is ever going to concretely benefit from this. No one.
The autistics, who are helpless in many situations already, certainly won't benefit from child traumas.
Society as a whole is wasting lives by labeling people as burdens from the beginning of their childhood.
We are not perfect. no one is. We can have troubles learning and understending specific things.
We may not talk like others or not talk at all. We may feel awful in settings that are comfortable to others.
We can be impolite by saying an offensive thing without meaning it. We can be clumsy and silly sometimes.
We can be very stubborn to face a new reality and we can show very little empathy to others.
But we can also be brilliant in other specific fields.
We can concentrate so well on single tastks and we aren't happy until we're done.
Thinking outside the box comes easy when you live outside the box. Many of us are geniuses.
Many of us are ordinary people, like the neurotypicals, who are just seeking fulfilment and a joyful life.
We can be so much more than a burden to society but we don't have to collectively prove we are valid
just so we can trade our skills for acceptance.
We don't need to purchase our human rights, because we have them already. It's just that many didn't notice.
We don't have to show we have superpowers to expect integration and respect.
We are not aliens and we are not on this world to undermine peace and stability.
We are not parasites and we are not here to suck the world dry.
we are not monsters and we are not here to jumpscare you.
All we are is people. All we need to do is be autistic.
Happy autism awareness day.
