Description
I'm currently doing some Master copies in order to help improve my skill. I think I can learn a lot studying from the old Masters, especially in terms of color. The original piece titled "The Bacchante" is from Gerome Jean Leon. I started this one in black and white and added color in the later stages. I might be using this technique in all my future pieces, I'm not so sure. Colors can tend to get a bit muddy if you start off with greyscale, but hopefully I can rectify that. You can check out the WIP on my blog as well: [link]Related content

Phenomenally stunning work....I love this style of art; very nostalgic, romantic and real. If I didn't know better I'd say it was a period work that had been preserved over the ages. You did an amazing job.

Thank you, really enjoy this style too. Always has a very classical feel which I enjoy - glad to hear you dig this one

You're very welcome. And indeed I dig it...to epic proportions in fact.

looks amazing! This looks like something the old masters would paint!

Very nice study. The colors turned out pretty well even with a grayscaled under painting. Something I've been playing around with in my studies to help keep away from getting muddy is working with a yellow toned under painting. Similar to a Flemish oil painting technique, but obviously digital. I quickly noticed that it's easy for the painting to have a very warm feeling. So starting with different tones of colors to create an over all mood for the painting is something else to think about.

Yeah I know what you mean, that's one of the reasons I stopped working this way actually. Takes too long and colors tend to get too muddy, not worth it, at least not for me.

I noticed that too with starting in grayscale, so I go straight to doing it in a color I like and keeping it monotone, makes it easier to adjust colors if using sliders. Plus I find black and white to be boring to work in.
Awesome work though, I'm actually inspired to do a master copy myself. Anything you'd recommend?

Honestly I now hate working like that, it feels like I'm painting the image twice and takes much too long. Instead, I just keep a greyscale layer on top to make sure my values are working.
I HIGHLY recommend doing master studies - I learn a ridiculous amount from them. As for what I recommend, I'd say anything from Bouguereau. I learned a lot on how to handle color studying his works, so I'm sure it's very beneficial.

I agree there about not liking to do double the work, I'm slow enough already!
Awesome, I'll definitely check him out! Thanks much!
