Description
I like this one so much that I am very likely going to do more of this with the hand-painted words like this. The words were done in gold ink, that's why they may look funny. They kind of look different depending on you angle on the piece. I panted them freehand with no reference. For zoomed details of this image look at [link]

The use of words in paintings almost always irks me. Apart from that, I think this is great. The way you've crumpled the paper towels makes them look like segments of leaves. It works very well that the holes 'disappear' towards the top.

Now, what irks you about them? And are you referring to intentionally painted-on words like these, or any words in general (such as collaged words mixed in under the paint).
Segments of leaves... hmm, I could see that. I love hearing everyone's input. So many different perspectives.

Any words. What irks me is that they tend to literally spell out the mood and meaning of the painting. When I try to experience and interpret it myself, when I try to really get under the painting's skin, the words are noise. It feels like the painting is shouting at me what to feel.

So would you personally like this piece better without the words? Would it have enough interest without the words?

It's interesting as it is, but yeah, I'd like it better without words. It's not like removing the words would take the gloom and loneliness out of it. On the contrary.

Hmm well thanks for the input. Interestingly enough, I've gotten so much positive input on this piece, and I've enjoyed it so much, that I've been planning to do more pieces in a similar manner with words painted over the top. Although I'll agree with you on this one being maybe too direct. It definitely tells you what to feel... which is a little unlike me to do. Maybe some more ambiguity is in order.

If I weren't so broke I'd say I would pay good money for this. It feels like there are repressed emotional undercurrents in this piece... as if the person who created it was a bit misanthropic, or 'isolated', I guess. Not to be too presumptuous with whether you are antisocial or not, but that's what I get from this.

This was done at a time where I had moved out of a familiar environment to a new one. New place to live, new school, very few local friends. I think the phrase somewhat stemmed from my immediate circumstances, but it's not like that was a foreign feeling to me. I actually found the phrase in an ad for some anti-depressant medication. I thought it spoke in such general terms that it would be inviting to a lot of people, not just me. I hadn't even planned on painting words on there til the very end. This piece, more than any others so far, evolved and changed so much from where it started. It all came together so perfectly I think though. It's connected with a lot of people and I'm so happy for that. You're not the first person on dA or in real life that's offered to buy it.
So to answer your question, I was somewhat misanthropic at that time. And there are repressed emotional undercurrents; quite literally, actually. There are bunches of clippings of images and words carefully arranged, but lost under those crunched-up paper towels and paint. These words tell a story of my thoughts at the time, but they're covered up, or "repressed", underneath the surface. They're right there in front of you, but you'll only be able to read maybe half a word at most. I've even forgotten a lot of what used to be visible.

I like the idea, and how the piece makes me feel like the titles. The black paint dripping down seems to represent some form of evil, and the writing is very good with no reference.

Ingenius. I swear I love your works and the creativity that put into them... Its simplistic, involves my favorite tones and it uses objects I would'nt have thought of in ways I wouldn't have thought of...
I'd have to say your ways are definitly inspiring... I've already taken a page out of your book by browsing local thrift stores! Thanks

i don't really know, that's the problem. i guess because of the negative space, i agree with what another commenter had to say. it's a very simple piece [in terms of, not overly detailed] but then again with the subject matter it almost has to be to fit. i dunno it's just a little odd but i like it!

Not often I see pieces with negative space that actually works, compositionally. Did you just choose random objects for this, or think it through? In my opinion, the pegboard is pretty awesome, it does a better job than plywood or canvas would have. The colours are fantastic, that dirty peach colour is great, I don't know if that was intentional, but whatever. This really interests me.

patternsinthestatic In reply to soultown [2006-01-22 06:25:06 +0000 UTC]
Well, the pegboard was random. I usually just go to the Home Depot scraps dept and get whatever cool lookin pieces they have. I collaged the top half of the pieces, but after I covered them with the paper towels and several layers of paint you could hardly see anything underneath. So i went with a whole new approach that was much more simple. Even after I thought I was done with the second idea, I didn't like it that much. The lettering across the front was an afterthought, but for me that's what makes it all come together. So was this intentional? Yes and no. But nothing I do is ever really thought out too much in advance anyway. I love the creative flow that happens in the process, so I just go with it.

Yeah, I suppose you do what I do - very little planning, just "k that looks good here so I'll do it!" Whereas I stop when I get bored, and you just go till you're finished, I guess. It's a good learning process :]

Well, usually I have a mess all over my floor for a week or so while I do the piece. If I'm feelin creative I'll sit down and put a few hours into it and spread it out over several days. Sometimes though I feel really dedicated and I'll set aside like a whole Saturday and just go for it. Turn on my music and just get in the zone. i love it.
