Reminds me so much of that old sci-fi book cover art!

Hah - yeah, the TTA books, Chris Foss, Peter Elson... It's what I grew up with.

It'sĀ  a good start, but if you're trying to capture Foss' look your ship needs some odd mechanical appendage sticking out of one side or at least have one engine bigger than the other and the hull not entirely symmetrical. Random checkerboard patterns are a must too.

The textures on Chris Foss's ships are amazing.Ā

This design kind of reminded me of the B1-B Lancer long-range bomber. Perhaps one of the three most graceful looking war-planes in American military history. The others being the North American XB-70 Valkyrie, and the Grumman F-14 Tomcat.

Why impractical?

Given that if the engines are indeed backwards rather than designed to look the way they do, then it wouldn't be where it is. It never would have left the dock.

For one, spaceships don't need to be all that aerodynamic.

Unless they operate in an atmosphere. Land and/or take off from planets.

True, but if it was meant for that, then the engines would need cowlings due to their lack of aerodynamics. Of course, they could use energy shielding to make them sleeker, but then why is the rest of the ship nice and smooth and pointy while they aren't?

I think it's a neat ship, just pointing out the impracticalities.

Only if you plan to only fly in space and not into any atmospheres or debris fields or nebulas or anything with small mass and a large spread. Keep clear of all of those and yeah I can see how it wouldn't make sense to make it aerodynamic.Ā
