Description
The reference for this piece came from a very talented photographer Travis Silva 500px.com/photo/5111448 I loved the picture of course, but I also loved the story behind it, quoting Travis - "After putting in a water well into a local village in Malawi, we see the kids enjoying the blessing of clean water for the first time" I guess most of us on DA take water for granted, and do not appreciate the blessing it is to have hot/cold running water at all times. Β The child in this picture is making the most of such an amazing and life changing experienceI would like to think that this is probably my most realistic pencil drawing? It is certainly one that I enjoyed drawing and still enjoy looking at it now that it is finished - despite the 30+ hours that it took to complete!
Drawn on locally sourced smooth paper it measures 38cm X 38cm, using a wide range of traditional pencils from 4H through to 8B and plenty of erasers.

I helped to found an organization that works with communities in Kenya and Malawi, so this picture has a very profound impact. Truly breathtaking.Β

Just updating some of my old drawings by scanning them rather than my old photographs - makes a big difference in the range of tones etc.

wow love this... how do you get to do your background... is it with graphite or charcoal???
π: 0 β©: 1
Paul-Shanghai In reply to majo9263 [2015-04-07 01:54:32 +0000 UTC]
Graphite, I draw lots of circles and fill them in with different grades of pencil, or erase etc to try and get the effect - quite simple but time consuming! Thanks for the comment - an old drawing, but I am framing a few pieces so taking the Β opportunity to scan (before I used a camera).

Thanks... I got a scanner too but the biggest scan I can do is 11 x 17 inch. Some of my drawings are 14 x17 or 19 x 24... do you scan them in those seize?

Paul-Shanghai In reply to majo9263 [2015-04-26 05:52:51 +0000 UTC]
Well my scanner bed is 43cm X 30cm which is big enough for most although if you try and use the full extent you get shadows in corners etc. so I tend to scan in sections (normally 3 or 4) and then 'stitch' them together using a bit of software I found on the internet - the scanner was a present to myself as larger format ones can be very expensive (but worth every penny )

Hi Joe, just framing some of my older work - and taking the opportunity to scan them (the old upload was a photograph)

I did this a while ago, and whilst putting it into a frame I thought I would scan (before it was just a photo) the image from the scanner is much clearer - glad you like it

Thanks - yes I am framing some of my older work, so whilst I have them out I thought I would scan and upload again - the scanner picks up far more detail and tone range - better than my old camera pics

Great choice of subject matter - the delight in the child's face so evident, so beautifully captured. You've done an amazing job of not just replicating the wonderful photograph, but actually enhancing it.
Really, brilliant job.

Glad you like it - it was a brilliant original photograph, with lots more going on in the background - but I thought this was a decent enough crop to attempt, and it kept the message etc.
