Now as the title says both can be good things if their done right. Mostly speaking for gore fanfics when I say that. Just like with human horror movies things have to be set in a way you can believe and not just blood all over the place for no reason.
Let's compare a good MLP horror fic with a bad one.
Bad:Cupcakes: Pinkie pie asks rainbow dash to help make some snacks only to be knocked out and slaughtered by her friend for no reason what-so-ever.
Did pinkie accidentally swallow bath salts or some dark spirit from the everfree forest posse her before hand? The reason for her doing this is never explained.
Good: Silent ponyville 1: pinkie pie is having trouble sleeping and doesn't know why. She keeps having nightmares about something to do with her sister but she doesn't remember what. Going to twilight for help she is put under a spell that sends her into the foggy part of mind.While avoiding deadly creatures and solving puzzles she starts to remember. Her dreams are of a tragedy that happened to her sister that she blames herself from not preventing.
Pinkie is in character throughout while at the same time adding a bit more depth to her. We know she has sisters shown in (S1 epi 23) and that life wasn't always happy for her before seeing the sonic rainboom. Its an interesting what if scenario that's not all that odd. It avoids seeming to much like Silent hill with gore for no reason. Not all ponies in the MLP:FIM universe are sugar sweet as seen mostly in S2 with episodes like 9 and 19, this fic brings it to a dark what if level.Read it and weep also brought up there are ponies with severe mental problems in Equestria.
Now I didn't understand the issue with people saying you can't add depth to a stereotype if you put it somewhere else. Look at total drama Island, 22 teens each a stereotype to the EXTREME but being put in unknown territory made them develop a tad more. In fanfictions for these characters people delve where the show TDI can't in"what if situations" Either what if this character never did this,meet that person,didn't get on the show,got cancer,got pregnant,etc.
Same goes for MLP horror fiction with the what if say a zombie virus suddenly struck or what made luna turn evil effects some other pony. It can be bad but only if your not taking your time to make it a story rather then a pony just going deranged. It goes for any kind of fanfiction for anything.

Finally someone says it. Yeah both cute and scary are good! I love the adorable heart attacking inducing sweetness from cute ponies but I love the horror of stories like Cupcakes, Silent Ponyville, and Rainbow Factory.

Cupcakes wasnt that bad it was pretty intresting to me because I did read Rainbow Factory and Cupcakes. Rainbow Factory was worst than Cupcakes because Rainbow Dash killed almost thousands of fillies or if not fillies young mares and colts. I mean cupcakes was still cool but not that bad Pinkie didnt kill Rainbow Dash with no reason remember she pulled her number :c Pinkie didnt wanna pull out Rainbow but its her job. And at the end of Rainbow Factory Rainbow kills her BIGGEST FAN because she failed a flight test. Thats just awful man...But Im guessing you like Rainbow Dash more then ever just like me c; .
But yush Slient Ponyville sounds very intresting Ill give it a read sometime.

My thing with cupcakes is though,why would the element of laughter that likes making others laugh plus smile enjoy seeing others crying and in pain.It seemed like a very OOC thing for pinkie of all ponies to be doing without something making her do it. I can even see if they implied she was eating poison joke while she was doing this and it was giving her a twisted since of humor.Her calender telling her to just doesn't seem like a good alibi to me. Same goes for rainbow factory actually though it felt like they at least had a reason for their deeds it didn't seem necessary. This guy even makes fun of the fact. [link]
I just used the first cute and scary image I could get permission for. I kinda blame the cupcake franchise for all the fics where the CMC are the first unfortunate victims.People wanting to make something to out nasty cupcakes I think. Applejack is my favorite character and luckily has almost zero "...and suddenly their a psycho" fanfictions.
Silent ponyville has had many spin offs but you'll be able to find the first story with pinkie by the image of a crying pinkie pie as the cover image.

Thank you for your feedback I enjoy a reponse to art someone has made. I aggree with you that both stories were off and thanks for telling me the cover of slient ponyville because Ive saw about 5 of them with different covers and is slient ponyville have chapters or is it like a one-shot. c;
I wasnt here to troll. Trolling isnt my thing thats so unrainbow. And I totally understand now ^^. Just a mistake on the stamp thats all. And Ill try to see why that ended up there @__@ Because other things non-related popped up there also so its not just you.

Overall, I agree. As long as you do a good job and have some respect for the source material you can write a MLP horror, or a horror from any cute genre.
That being said, I cant pretend like I dont get it. Hell, my favorite anime is Higurashi, whose bread and butter is jumping between cute and horror, but I still get why MLP horror can bother people. Basically MLP, even with its darker elements is just such a happy place many people just dont want that level of darkness or grittiness to be associated with it.
