Description
As her second bandages her hands to prevent injury, Josie is starting to realise that this might not be such harmless fun as her friend Marilyn thinks, far from being big and soft like pillows the gloves are small and quite hard.(another teaser from the story tentatively title "Mum's Tale". )

I was also rather surprised how hard a pair of gloves was, although to be fair I think they were intended for heavy bag / pad work, rather than sparring.

I believe gloves in those days were stuffed with horse hair .. rather than the high density foam used in more contemporary gloves. Not sure how they compare in terms of weight.

yes I used to have a number of pairs. The horsehair came through cracks and could do a lot of damage since it rubbed the face.

You might--but even without that, she's not all that confident...not a good thing for a fighter.Β That top will show blood nicely, and that fair skin will emphasize the bruises.

Good grief at the time this is set Bill would probably have sold you the business for that much. Any side bets would more likely be in shillings and probably about how long Β she stayed on her feet. Bert and Jasper in the crowd " bet you 2 bob she don't last a round!" sort of thing.
