Due to a little known Star Fleet regulation, at least one of each gender is required to be aboard each starship. Guess what? You're the ONLY male aboard a ship of 500+ women of all different species.

Several Romulans from frontier colonies had started 'crossing the line' after Ambassador Spock saved Romulus from the effect of the Nemesis Supernova (although at the cost of his own life). Within a generation, Romulan (for they still declined to think of themselves as 'Vulcan') officers were reaching the highest ranks in the fleet. That said, the seemingly hard-wired Romulan sensuality made female officers of that species somewhat... uncomfortable to be around, especially for hormonal youths straight out of the Academy.
