What program do you use? SAI or PhotoShop or GIMP?
In GIMP 2.6 there is a "Dodge/Burn tool" and then I sludge the lighten/darken part. Here are the samples - [link] and [link]
Or if you don't have GIMP 2.6 (I think there are some similar tools in other art programs), before I found out how to use these "Dodge/Burn tool" I chose a darker color of the main color. (for example light green - darker green) and then I sludge it.

The paws were really hard cause, I used a ref and could barely see how they looked liek, and my weakest point is the paws! so it was so annoying >_<
