This is it. Catch it now. Here's hoping it works folks and isn't too slow. **Best in flash player.**The premiere of my semester-long project, "Learn to Fly," pupit's debut hand-drawn animation (technically his second animation ever as a flash + live action back in '05). Two months, about 290 sheets of vellum, countless hours drawing, scanning, testing, timing, filling in missed areas, playing with the frames; three different programs, days of ruts and art blocks, a lot of late nights, daydreaming and sketching...all of it comes together for a one minute and 30 second pencil test film. I honestly didn't realize how time consuming--despite all the warnings from reading and getting the info from the artists' quotes--this was going to be. It got to the point where I had to clip some of the storybaord, which may have made parts of the story less clear. I wish I had the color put in, but that will be for another time.
Besides the lack of time to put in more scenes, some of the repeats were bothersome. The running scene especially: the cycle is ongoing, but the background isn't. Another flaw is Pupit's shift in form in the first scene. And...flash won't let me switch the scene order so I can't put the title at the beginning. But I'm not going to point out all the flaws because I think some speak for themselves. And I hope you guys point out some too.
This was an independent study in animation from concept sketches to character sheets to storyboard to animation drawings and finally putting them together and timing the scenes. This is my first complete animation and I am pretty proud of what I've accomplished. I tried using cycling, squash and stetch, panning attempts, and other things I cannot bring to mind right now. I do intend on going back and fine tuning it, adding scenes, more frames and eventually color. I received a B+ from my advisor.
So yes, this is it. Let me know what you think. Tell me what scenes I should add more to, what isn't clear, etc. Keep in mind for those that don't know, pencil tests aren't nescessarily solid...ie, they're transparent.
Thank you and goodnight!

Well the sequence was supposed to be a nightmare. His wings were still bitten when he fell...maybe you were looking at his arms(?)
Thanks for the comments.

that took a little while to load but it was very worth it! pupit is just too adorable and the quick story showed his potential to fly smoothly after trying hard.
the only confusing flaw i saw was when that long-necked creature bit off pupit's wings, they were back when he fell and was sitting on the grass. or was it something he thought of if he didn't learn how to fly?

OH MY GOSH. That is soooo freakin' awesome I don't even know what to say!...... I didn't know anything about the beginning, so that was a big surprise. And little Pupit is so adorable!! Heh, yeah, I didn't know anything about pencil tests, so probably would have been like 'oh hey, it's see-through'.. but I'm glad you explained so I get it, lol. It's awesome that it's so long too!! I love it!! I thought it'd be a little 30 second thing or somethin', swishing by so fast I could barely see it. What I wanna know is, why in the hell did your advisor only give you a B+?! You SO deserved an A!!! Well, they're an asshole because this is adorable, well-drawn, has a perfect speed, and has an amazing plot, for only a minute and a half!!!
