Description
Hellhounds are perhaps the most fiendish monsters to ever walk the planet, even rivaling the dragons and sea serpents in terms of ferocity; measuring 2.2 meters long and standing at 1.2 meters tall, these nocturnal mammals are found in extreme environments such as tundras, volcanoes, and deserts, terrorising just about anything 2 times their size or smaller. They are canine in appearance, with a slender, furry body, long, slender legs, a moderately long tail, and a big head with a long snout and forward-facing eyes; however, they also have a lot of traits that range from largely strange to downright creepy, such as blood red eyes, pointy, keratinous spines situated on their shoulders, robust crushing teeth, and big, bat-like ears. In general, everything about them is so ghastly that many people tend to think of them as canine demons rather than monstrous wolves.Hellhounds aren't as visually-oriented as their smaller (and far more normal-looking) cousins; to make up for this, their senses of smell and hearing are nearly flawless, allowing them to home in on prey detected from even the most subtle odors and the quietest sounds. As well as this, they often hunt prey bigger than themselves, cooperatively acting together in packs led by a patriarch in order to bring their targets down; if that wasn't bad enough, their hunting method consists of chasing their prey to exhaustion before dragging them down to the ground and eating them alive (which is perhaps the most traumatizing scene I've ever watched). Hellhounds often communicate to each other through strange grunts, growls, and barks; however, their most distinctive call is their bone-chilling howl, which, in all candor, sounds less like a baying dog and more like a wailing banshee. In general, hellhounds are extremely vicious, intelligent, and terrifying; the sound of their ghastly howl spells doom for any unfortunate explorer attempting to simply traverse the perilous volcanoes.

They'd eat sparse wasteland vegetation when there's nothing around.

Maybe.
If so, it would probably be a cousin of the "mysterious evil dog" black Cadejo.
