Ah, every time I post something, it reminds me how much I hate the categories system | D...Anyways, drew this about a month back for a friend...Watercolors in some paper...Her characters.....Uhhh...I wanted them to be in space...But I went too crazy with the colors, and not so crazy with the blacks : /

Thank you so much; I'm really glad you like it. As for how I drew this, well, there's not much I can say seeing as how I don't really do much. I just sketched it out with pencil, I don't ink my drawings so I just went and darkened the areas most important and/or where it was more likely to be washed out when adding the watercolors. Do keep in mind that once is colored you can't erase the pencil; it will just wash out the paint, so careful with what you pencil in, it'll stay there!!
Areas where you want to add more flat detail, like, let's say the hair for both of them, once you color in it's base color, DO wait for it to dry, that way when you add the shading it won't mix in with the base and create a more 'gradient' feel. Though I myself add one 'gradient' layer and THEN add the more flat areas of shade ONCE it dries.
Another example would be her blue skirt. Because of the kind of fabric it is, and the folds it makes, I wanted the shading to be more solid on the folds. I painted the dress, added a first layer of very light shadow that was washed out; that would be the area where the shade covers more of the garment. The dark,solid blue lines are the shade of the individual folds.
The purple upper part of the dress I wanted to make a smoother fabric, so I gave it less shadows, in a more washed out way, the shades here are only solid on certain areas, areas in which the shadow is more flat and stronger. Now for the BG, I just got the thing wet where I wanted it to be and added colors like crazy; for this effect you do not wait for it to dry, unless you want a color to stand out more!
Last thing I can say is to plan ahead what colors go where! You may not be able to create actual layers like in digital art, but is very important to keep the order of things in your head! Don't paint hair first and THEN paint the skin underneath it @_@ !!! I always keep a second sheet of paper next to me, which is where I try out the colors before actually putting them on the art piece ( Very important! You HAVE to try whether is the right shade or if it has enough/too much water!! ) and on that same page I write down a list of what to paint and the order in which it all goes!!

well as u know, i love it. the colors of her dress work really well with the colors from space, it almost makes it seem like she's from outer space xD; but in a good way. His colors on the other hand make him look like he's out of place out there while she's perfectly at home. I love it all. ^^

Also, I hate the category system as well. There's no way to make a category for everything, because some things are to unique to be categorized. Yet we have to categorize everything!? It's a real pain at times.
