Wow, 190 flaps per second, twice than thoseΒ of Hummingbirds!
A very beautiful plate.

I inspired myself from the flying insects, (fly, dragonfly and beetles species can have a very high flapping frequency)! However I prefer not think about the mechanical strength loss, wear and vibration issues that such system would have in real life... My guess is it would be likely to destruct itself by vibrating uncontrollably before even being able to take off...

Oh man, what a neat cut-away illustration! I'm impressed with the level of detail in the mechanical systems; even a small aircraft has a lot of parts to depict and you've made a really comprehensive-looking reference for a fantastical ship--The engine and transmission elements in particular!
I'd love to make a similar schematic for one of my Lancers, but even not being that much larger or sophisticated, I think it would take forever to get the kind of detail you got here!

Hello! Sorry for my late reply! I spent my holidays far from deviantart! I am very touched by your comment! When I imagine an aircraft or a ship, l try to make the details look the more "realistic" possible (even if the whole thing defy the physical laws...). This drawing took a lot of time, but actually it was not very difficult... No perspective, no action or expression... The only thing is how precise l wanted to be.
Actually I think that the Lancers are quite more complicated than my CX... They have heavy armament and ammo to carry...
Anyway thank you very much for your interest and encouraging comments!

No need to apologize, the holidays are a good time to take a break!
I really like that approach; both as personal preference and because I think it helps build a stronger story and aid suspension of disbelief!Β
Aha, true that drawing a flat schematic feels like a relief vs. drawing the same machine in perspective though... But by the same token, you are also specifically highlighting systems and details which would typically be obscured under other circumstances... Anyway, I think you did a great job with it!
I suppose there is a bit of a step up in complexity with the Lancers, but still a drop in the bucket compared to doing a cut-away of similar details on a full size capital ship!Β Β

I will probably never try to draw a battleship cutaway with the same amount of detail, as I would most likely die from age before finishing... But I tried a small submarine for this project, but in A3 format, and infortunately, I can't find a way to scan it...
Too bad anyway, as I would have loved to see a cutaway of the Freeport vessel!

Yep, I can only imagine how long the illustrations for those big cutaway view books take to draw!
Sounds like you might need a commercial-size scanner for that... Maybe an office supply store or print shop could scan it for you? I think for all my old charcoal drawings I just ended up taking photos though haha.
Oh man, a cutaway of Freeport would be really neat! But as it's essentially an aircraft carrier with rental cabins and a giant street market, I think illustrating everything going on inside it would be a multi-month project all by itself!

Ha ha yes I was joking about it! I think that it would be easier to draw a cutaway for an entire city, rather tan for Freeport which is a mix between a machine and a town...You would need at least an A2 format paper to make this!

Puts me much in mind of a vanship.
I love technical cutaways. This is great!

Thank you very much! Cutaway are not easy to draw!
Are you speaking about the vanships from the last exile?

Thank you very much! I must say I am quite proud of this one... I took a special attention to this aircraft because it will be the main aircraft of my characters, (at least at the beginning of the story) but I may have been carried away with the details of its design and the prototypes story!Β I am not sure I will put all of it in the comics ha ha!

Well, I am always trying to give my machines a "workable" look, but the pulse jet engine efficiency is highly dubious, considering the air intake has a grid, and the cooling system (consisting of an heat exchanger) may be not very useful...

I understood and liked the idea of floating cruiser, as it's quite realistic and obviously EPIC.
But THIS THING...I think you overdone it a bit. Cuz um..can it actually fly? Tbh, the only strange detail here is this bottom-front storage container. It looks quite unrealistic and weird. It would be more logical to split this one giant container in 2 or 4 small containers and place them to the place where wings connect to the corpus of the jet. For the rest, you've done a great job! So many details and information, I like this!

PCFayard In reply to Overlorder0 [2019-12-11 10:27:23 +0000 UTC]
Ha ha! If you found that the 5000t flying cruiser was realistic, wait for the 80000t flying battleship! Thank you for your very good feedback! The storage container is in fact nothing more than a blank space in the hull, in which small tools, mail and food can be stored during the flight (more weight could be very dangerous for an already instable plane)... Nothing very fancy about it XD!

It may take time before I succeed to draw it! None of the sketches I have made yet have pleased me... I am looking for a pre-dreadnought look, but i am starting to understand why so few comics feature battleships!
