Description Burnt & painted wood, *Charcoal fired stoneware and cast bronze. 130cm x 80cm

*High fired stoneware. "Charcoal fired" refers to a firing process developed by Philip Cornelius [link] in which wares are dry stacked in a kiln without shelves, fired to cone 11+. Mesquite charcoal is introduced to the kiln at cone 8 and 11. The goal is to reproduce the surface effects of a wood fired kiln, but in the convenience of a gas kiln.

Thank you for the DD!! and to everyone for the favs, comments, impressions and feedback. I would like to personally thank all of you. This piece has evoked far more impressive interpretations than I had originally intended when I set out to build it. People keep seeing it as some sort of reference to the atomic bomb attacks on Japan. I too am moved by this observation and thank everyone for allowing me to see this in my work. I'm a bit embarrassed of the simplistic manner at which I was inspired to make this. There is art built with the intention to communicate a message and art to provoke thought.
Cheers to eveyone

Congrats on the DD. I think the beauty of art is that it provokes thought and moves emotions, regardles of the inspiration from where it comes from. Art is a universal language, and this is proof of it.

This piece is absolutely stunning. Reading the comments thus far, I have a feeling the impression it gave me was not the artist's intent, but I feel very moved by how it made me feel. This gorgeous piece feels to me like it belongs in a Hiroshima memorial museum, and if I had just happened to see it on some random google search that's exactly what I would have assumed it was from. Simply trying to express the impact of this statue has me blinking back tears. An excellent piece of art, and truly deserving of a daily deviation feature.

Thank you so much for the comment and for sharing your feelings when viewing this piece. Although most of my motivation to make was based on a technical challenge the visual impact of the finished piece was a surprise for me to. A lot of creativity comes from my subconscious and I feel I cannot take full responsibility for the end result.
I understand everyones point about this piece triggering visuals of the attack on Japan, but I'm not sure I would feel comfortable having this on display in Hiroshima or Nagasaki as it would remind people of the sheer terror caused by atomic bomb. Rather I think a more angelic form might be more appropriate to honor the people killed than one representing the true agony and pain caused by that event.

LadyYui In reply to PCStudio [2010-10-30 09:51:53 +0000 UTC]

I can understand that kind of sentiment. One way that I believe honors the memory of the dead is to make sure that future generations never forget the lessons learned in the past, and what was done to those two cities was yes, indeed, horrific. As long as people are reminded of that, we ensure that those who died will not have died in vain, and preserve for our children as best we can a future as free of another terrible event like this ever taking place.

whoa! <- I think that is everyones first reaction to this. It's got a bit of mystery to it too, I'm wondering to myself... what is the meaning of the figure hanging from what looks like a Torii?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PCStudio In reply to DragonCid [2010-10-29 15:53:07 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it's a torii. I still discover new ways of interpreting this piece. It was initially inspired by a photo in my art history book of a wooden sculpture of a monk with little spirits or something coming from his mouth. Then I set out for the technical challenge of combining the elements of bronze, clay and wood. The shrinkage of the clay was biggest consideration.
