I've looked, now I can't stop looking.
It's too good, while MTT NEO is my favourite character even if he's the weakest "boss" in game.

I love the design of this boss.
However at the same time, this was a HUGE disappointment in the Genocide run. Seriously, one hit?

That's kind of the point? Genocide was designed to be "not fun". Every single character in the game tries to stop your genocide run, and all the boss fights are either jokingly easy or frustratingly hard. It's anti-climatic because that's just how powerful you are at that point in the game. Β It also makes sense from a technical perspective. If you know your undertale lore, a human can do anything if it puts it's mind to it, which is why they won the war against monsters. So a human with the will to kill will do just that: kill. The fight was disappointing on purpose.

Well, besides that, it makes sense the fight would be anticlimactic from a realistic view. NEO was terribly rushed- if there was enough time between his upgrade and you killing everyone, he would probably have gotten better defenses or a better battery. His attack stat is actually massive- but since he can't attack first (and Toby didn't bother to give him any attacks) he never gets to use it. Another thing is that he was supposed to stall for time while Alphys evacuated the survivors⦠he KNEW he couldn't win.

His NEO form wasn't rushed, nor was it an upgrade. If Mettaton was being honest at that point- which seems rather likely- than NEO was his first form. However, you are correct in that it wasn't to it's full potential, as he said it had "NEVER BEEN FULLY REMOVED". Alphys had originally tried taking that form out. In my opinion, it's more likely that Mettaton didn't even consult Alphys before attacking the human, given his dialogue in the beginning. He talks about the death of humanity, and how he needs an audience- he said "I REALIZED SOMETHING GHASTLY," meaning he found out himself. My headcanon is that Mettaton realized that, what he said before, "THIS WORLD NEEDS STARS MORE THAN IT NEEDS CORPSES!!!" was irrevelant, that no one pays attention to stars in times such as this. And so, attempting to be something people cheer for, a hero, like Undyne, he got up and used what he thought was his strongest form (which explains why it was so bad, not because Alphys miscalculated, but because he didn't know the extent to which NEO was downgraded), and tried to be a hero, which is why his theme is Undyne the Undying's motif; he just wants to be a hero, be cheered for, and to have an audience.Β

Okay fair enough, but still. I feel like it was just a wasted opportunity. I mean, at least give him an attack if we DO check him so he has something.

Though, I think it was meant to be that way because, if you just kill him in one hit, and he has only a single line at the end, then it wouldn't grant the player much closure for the character. Also, a huge boss battle with Mettaton NEO like the one with Undyne would soften the blow on the player once they got to the REAL Genocide boss... Sans. Though, overall I agree, I think he should've at least had a programmed attack maneuver when you checked him, if not then at least two or three hits to kill him; He /was/ a human eradication machine, after all.
