Millions of years ago war broke out between a few gods. Solaris and Black Doom bickered the most in particular, and Solaris punished Doom by taking away the master emerald and the phantom ruby, sending both through time and space to land on Earth. In an attempt to weaken the abilities of the sacred gems, Solaris invented the sol emeralds, seven emeralds controlling at least one element that can only be used by a female.

The sol emeralds are just useless rocks unless they are being held by each of their chosen owners. The sol emeralds will choose seven women with powers to use them, and if used can create elemental based power with no side effect. The blue sol emerald controls metal to be bended at will, the yellow sol emerald gives the power of mind reading and mind control, the red sol emerald controls fire, the green sol emerald controls electricity, the purple sol emerald controls air, the turquoise sol emerald can control chaos, and the white sol emerald can manipulate time.

The phantom ruby is what caused humanity and animals to evolve into mobians and humans making them live side by side, however some animals did not evolve. So, to make it less confusing the evolved animals were called Mobians. The phantom ruby arrived millions of years ago.

When Solaris took the sacred emeralds from the Black Arms, they sent them to Mobius where the Master Emerald would find itself lodged into a temple on top a mountain in the 1890s not long after Gerald Robotnik conducted an expedition to the island and discovered sacred signs of a mobian fighting a man in a machine which would inspire him to create Shadow.

The entire Island would begin to fly off the ground, and a race of Echidnas would believe it was a gift from their gods. For generations, the chief would have their firstborn guard the emerald and steer it around the planet as they would rob blind the people beneath them. The temple's base had water surrounding the spot where the emerald landed, serving as a manmade pond. When the master emerald collided into it this formed the entity known as Chaos.

After a successful raid of the Acorn Kingdom the soon to be chief of Echidnas Tikal was gifted the teal sol emerald stolen from one of the cities below. This emerald being in her possession granted her the ability to speak to chaos and read just what their abilities were and how strong they are. Chaos, finally able to talk to someone warned Tikal that if the Echidnas continued to be thieves then they would find themselves punished by the universe unable to stop the outcome that befell them. Tikal, now seeing the wrong of her tribes actions, used her power as chief to insist they no longer raid the kingdoms below the island, however, no one listened to her, and her own son Locke would go on to encourage more raids deeming his own mother a crazy old woman.

Tikal did her best to stop her tribe from stealing but was always outnumbered. The best she could do was tell her grandson Knuckles that it was all wrong, and pray that Locke would not inherit the status of chief when she passed.

Then when Knuckles was eleven years old, a forest fire broke out on the island. No one knew where it had come from, but Tikal was able to take him to a cave and hide, only Tikal, Knuckles, and Chaos survived. Tikal would raise her grandson alone on the island for several years teaching him about the ways of Echidna culture before the arrival of the master emerald onto the island that ruined their lives.

Chaos would disappear after the event of the fire, and Knuckles and Tikal would live fairly peacefully with the exception of one debate they would have on the regular. Knuckles' father Locke. Knuckles had the belief he had escaped, believing he may have seen him gliding off the island and theorized he was looking for Knuckles but struggled to find the island since it's been floating freely for several years. Tikal however denied this to be possible, hoping Knuckles was wrong, hating herself for wishing her own son dead but knowing that if alive Locke would be a great threat to good people, especially the loving yet misguided Knuckles.

Tikal fell ill after Knuckles turned 18 and gave him a necklace that she made with the teal sol emerald, telling Knuckles to give it to his future wife, encouraging him to leave the island and explore when he felt ready but to always live on the island itself like a portable home. Knuckles agreed, and Tikal who was now well over 100 waded into the pond where the master emerald stood and disappeared in a flash of light.

Knuckles would figure out how to steer the master emerald and would for the most part live off the land alone for years until Sonic and Tails accidentally crash landed the tornado (the bi plane they just finished making that day) onto his island. Rumors persisted for years of a red ghost walking around the island being spotted from high up places where the island's surface could be made out with binoculars or a telescope. Knuckles had no intent of hurting the two unless they kept him company whenever the island floated above them. Sonic and Tails agreed and the two were secret friends.

Knuckles didn't aid in the resistance knowing he was only one person who couldn't take on Robotnik if he pissed him off. But he'd welcome his friends for brief breaks from the insanity below the island at most. Knuckles admitted he hated being one person, wanting nothing more than to help however. Eventually Sonic would go missing, and just Tails would visit Knuckles. Until one day that was when a different plane arrived to the island with a pink hedgehog inside who would come to him for help...
