Description
How apparent is it that I couldn't think of a good title?Hm. Anyway. This one's a gift for my pansy-loving auntie, whose dial-up connection I'm clogging up right now.
I really went to town on these pansies.
Crayola pencils, 8 by 10 inch Strathmore Drawing paper, 4-ish hours.

You also have an aunt that's crazy about pansies? Cool
It's my aunt's favorite flower, and since she ran a flower shop at our farm almost my whole life (she quit two years ago)I've grown found of them too.
The pic is lovely, very nice colouring

Yay for pansy-crazy aunties!
Thanks for the nice comment. I want to try pansies again some day in my markers.

yeah, your title had me all excited. I was ready for some pansy destruction. *sigh* maybe next time. I do love the technique you used though.

I love the variety in these pansies. I'm fond of them and don't think of them as having a boring shape -- though pansies and violas have a very easy to draw shape with large distinct petals and interesting variations in pattern and color, sometimes shading and sometimes distinct as bands or areas of color. The soft textured application's very different but lovely.
I'd suggest matting in white or a very pale pastel color for best effect doing this style of florals. I may have to get one of those drawing pads to fool with it and do some soft textured drawings too.
Alternately, you might try using this technique on watercolor paper and doing an underpainting in transparent watercolor. Or if you use the same paper, mark off a 4" x 6" area in the middle of the 8" x 10" paper so there are very wide margins and then underpaint carefully so that you don't cockle it too much -- in flat colors that work with the colors you're laying over them.
I did an underpainted salmon-colored rose yesterday with Prismacolor Watercolor Pencils and the final layer is definitely textured, but the underpainting gave it the same brilliance as if I'd gone ahead and burnished over and over till it was brilliant and textureless.
Both styles are great. Now you're inspiring me to do something like that again...

Whenever I see pansies, I think of Alice in Wonderland, and the little singing pansies And these are no exception.
Fantastically done, and a departure from your usual solid style. I enjoy this pastel look. It really looks like it should be on some stationery.
My favorite: definitely the blue pansy with the yellow face

I don't do any of that IM-type stuff, and I don't play online games. Note me next time you want to ask about something non-art related instead of sticking it in a comment on my art.

Now, I genereally don't have much to say about your flower pictures, seeing as it's not an area I'm overly interested in (depite always being well drawn), however I just had to say something about one of the recent ones, almost entirely because of the style you chose to colour it in. First time I opened this up I was quite surprised to see the colouring done this way. It's just an interesting contrast from your usualy style, which is usually so very bright and colourful. Personally, I'd like to see you play around with colouring this way a bit more, maybe in one of your anthro pictures, perhaps? *wink, wink, nudge, nudge*
I just think it would be neat to see what kind of effects you're capable of, aside from what I've already seen in the two flower pictures, which honestly were very well drawn and coloured. But anyway, neat stuff, interesting colouring <^^>

This Strathmore paper has a cool texture so this light style works really well. My drawing book has crappy texture. I'll keep experimenting, so don't worry. Thanks for the encouragement! Crayolas are really wonderful for this sort of thing. Much easier to control than mooshy Prismas, and so bright.

Argh! What a bunch of pansies!
I think it looks lovely, and it's nice that you tried a different colouring style with this artwork. I definitely agree with one of the commenters above me, who noted that some of the pansies look like butterflies. What an interesting observation. It's a very nice piece Peachfuzz.

Thanks, Donna. Pansies somehow seem a little prettier to me all of a sudden now that I'm thinking of them as little butterflies!

how colorful and beautiful. I think you make full use of the surface of this paper. put the strong touch on the front flower and leaves, and it make good contrast effect to the behind parts. I often see the pansie at the flower beds. but just now I notice a part of petals looks a few resemble to the butterfly. this flowers are very cute.

Thanks for the comment. I'm glad you like them.

like not smearing so much?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Peachfuzz In reply to CatalystSwitch [2006-07-26 01:19:59 +0000 UTC]
Exactly! Crayolas don't smear. Or at least, you have to try pretty hard to smear them. I also like that their leads are harder and hold a point better. I just wish they had more colors... Sometimes, I'll use them together. They're very compatible with each other and will even blend with one another.

When I started looking up pansy references I was so happy to find out that they came in so many different colors! I crammed a bunch of them on the page just so I could have a blast using all those different colors.
Thanks. She did love it.
