Description
I recently picked up some Faber-Castell Polychromos colored pencils at a ridiculously awesome discount, and was inspired to try them out on this piece of my character, Dia . I must say, these are the finest colored pencils I've ever had the pleasure of using. I did something very different for this piece by roughly sketching it in orange pencil, inking with a brush pen, and then coloring it without erasing the orange sketch lines. What fun!Faber-Castell Polychromos colored pencils, Faber-Castell Pitt brush pen, & Sanford Col-Erase pencil (orange) on 6 by 8 inch Strathmore 400 Series Drawing paper.

I'm the Faber-Castell Polychromos colored pencil user and I really love them, many of my colored pencil arts are drawn with my Polychromos colored pencils. I'm glad you encounter the good colored pencils. on the outline part, I also put the pale color in the first time and after the deeper color or colors along to the pale line and I feel it's easy way to make the good outlines.
on this art, I think it's rare to draw the portrait of the character, and it about to stick out the paper. before I try to use this like art but it's very difficult to make a good balance and I don't try this way, but you make it! this expressing way make the powerful mood, and this art really emphasize her hair style. I think she just aiming to something.

Thank you! I was thinking of you when I was coloring this and it's awesome to find out that you have Polychromos colored pencils, too. They really impress me. They're very different than the colored pencils I am used to and I love how vibrant they are even when coloring with a soft touch. I only used 9 pencils for this drawing.
I want to do more portraits like this of my characters. It's a good way to practice faces.

This certainly caught my eye. It can be a real blast to just pencil something out without worrying about correcting any sketch lines. I like your choice of warm tones and you definitely have an eye for color harmony. My good friend, Magic Clam who colors my work sometimes uses Faber-Castell colored pencils and he loves them. They have a vibrancy that really stands out and I can see that they work beautifully with your style!

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment! I appreciate it.
The vibrancy of the Faber-Castell Polychromos really impresses me, especially since they give their brightest color with a light touch. I'm more used to mashing colored pencils into the paper to get the brightest color out of them. I always wondered how Clam achieved such brilliant color and soft texture at the same time. Skill for the most part, of course, but I can see why he loves these pencils!

Aw, thanks! I really enjoyed letting the paper texture shine through. Drawing this gave me powerful nostalgia because I had a phase wayyyyy back before my DA years where I was inking everything with chunky thick black lines and coloring softly with colored pencils. Except back then I was flatly flood-filling areas with a soft layer of the base color because shading hadn't occurred to me yet. It was nice to revisit that old tactic with new skills. And these Polychromos colored pencils are fantastic!

Thanks so much. <3 It was nice to color with a soft touch and let the paper texture shine through. These Polychromos are very vibrant and almost painterly the way they easily apply to the paper with the softest touch - They don't need to be mashed into the paper to get bright, saturated color. I love them.

Welcome~!
Ooh that sounds nice o: But it also sounds like they would smear easily?

Surprisingly, no. They're oil-based pigment so they don't make any dust or flakes when you color, unlike normal wax-based pencils. I did a test swatch and rubbed my thumb over it as hard as I could to see how smeary the Polychromos are, but it hardly smeared at all. I'm really, really impressed with these colored pencils.
