Incredible! I have such a hard time building up my visual library. May I ask something? Back in the beginning. Did you do a lot of studies? Or did you just research references needed while creating a piece of artwork and learned that way? Many thanks!

Thanks for all the great comments Wundertastisch ! really appreciate it

To answer your question, BOTH are very important. Even until this day, I still go to check artbook, google image, nature, and study the crap out of what I am seeing. To be a concept artist, you have to be able to adapt and draw anything. that is why it is important to have this visual library you built up in your head from studies, so that you can come up with something amazing really quickly. obviously studying everything is just TOO overwhelming...start off with something you like. for me, I studied lots of mechanical pieces and mech artist, because i love robot stuff...once i got the the general idea of how to draw robots, it was easier to adapt to environments, human anatomies, props, and etc. Studying drawing will not just help you with visual vocabularies, but it will also enhance your overall skills.

When you want to start a new drawing or painting, always have good amount of references. but before you start on the painting, try doing quick studies of the painting. try to see it in 3D, try to understand the composition, try to understand color, or value, etc.. having references won't make you a great artist, but it will keep you reminded of the theme you are going for. reference helps you study, and study helps you with art.

studies, and references are very important, but in the end, in my opinion, I believe having passion drawing is #1 most important to be a better artist. Yes, i do sometimes feel forced to draw, and it's not a pleasant feeling, but changing up your workflow, trying out different techniques, learning from studies and reference keeps me inspired and passionate of what I'm doing. Having a strong passion really pushes you to the next level. Hope this helps!
