Description
On the California Zephyr, somewhere between Chicago and Mount Pleasant. He had a perfectly fine Canon Powershot (as I remember) with a flip-out preview screen and a good looking lens, but it was set on auto. So we compared cameras and he got a crash course in aperture and shutter speed. He was ready to skip the aperture and shutter speed priority settings and go straight to manual control -- with the built in light meter and preview screen, of course. I think he's on his way.

I really like the framing in this shot. He's down in the lower third (half?) of the frame, but that gives all the space around him to build the sense of the train and the openness. The parallel lines from the ceiling, and windows (with all the perpendiculars) builds the sense of space around him. The dark coat and hat then separate and set off the subject from the background.
Of course, his expression is great. Definitely involved, focused, excited to be interacting with someone who "gets" what his passion is, and eager to try something new. Even the water bottle gives character, giving him some background and personality (old dinged up water bottle that he always has with him).
In a way, the picture looks calm, but you can feel the energy just below the surface.

It's great fun to see the young folks bloom as the realize there's more to it than point and shoot.

Critique - i am not much for critique person, because i am always feel intimidated with the idea that i might say something wrong. For this image, i would crop out the unwanted area (on the top for example), the curiosity in his eyes was enough to carry the image

Thanks for the critique. I rarely crop shots from the Yashica-D (since it has a very accurate view screen) unless I'm trying to recover a shot where the rotation or framing just doesn't work. But your comment is a good reminder to get in close and personal and fill the frame, which, from your gallery, is something you do well.
Thanks,
Steve

Tee hee. Posting this shot reminded me that the ladies like photos of good looking young fellows as much as the fellows like photos of good looking young ladies.
