My second manip ever! :3This one took almost eight hours to do x.x
Especially since I had to do the hair from scratch-I messed it up doing the cut-out.
I'm uploading several versions of this photo, since I'm so indecisive.

It really does live up to the title. It is very simple and very well done, but perhaps a little too simple. Everything is a soft gray except for her hair and the underside of the hand, there isn't much contrast. The other version of this photo is expertly done and succeeds in the contrast department far better, but dont misunderstand me; i do enjoy this piece.

Very good, but I can see you doing this in a little over an hour. Keep practicing. The more you work with Photoshop, the faster you get!

Well, the cut-outs take me foreverrrr. But my uncle showed my a faster way to do it, which saved me hours x3
And of course, I completely effed up her hair trying to cut it out. So I make her bald and started from scratch with the smudge tool.

You should always save the original photos, incase you mess up and can't fix it. Well, save the cutout before you edit it, I mean. One mistake people make is relying too much on one tool in Photoshop. I did it once. When you do that, it becomes quite obvious you smudged the hell out of it. Try the pen tool if you know how to use it. You can get smooth strokes that way, or you can even download different brushes and use that to detail hair, which is what I do.

I dont really use a cutout, not really.
I first used the elliptical, and held shift while I moved along the outline.
However, now I use the quick selection took as well.
Once I have selected it, I make a copy via layer, and drag it to the other photo

this one is better for the brightness but the color has more depth
try a slightly brighter version of the color one
but theyre both great honey

I erased her hair and painted a black blob over her hair, then I used the smudged tool :3
I had to alternate the size of the brush so it could look real.
