Description sketch dump, sort've. i have the wicked soundtrack playing in my head all day.

heres the thing: i HATED that book. i hate hate haaaaate it. its been out for a looooong time. i hated it when it came out, i hated it now. i know everyone thinks it's gods gift to man, but i absolutely could not STAND elphaba in the book. i have no idea why, really. the only way i could explain it is that she sounded like a goddam mary sue. she had so many problems but was OH SO AWESOME. omg, she was born with a penis and was discriminated cause of her fucking skin color but she is all powerful but so insecure of herself but gets to bang a prince 4 or 5 times. FUCK HER. those problems are laaaame, considering she becomes Mega Bitch in the future. the book tried to place her as a victim but didn't fool me one fucking bit.

the whole book felt like i was reading an epicly long fanfic of the wizard of oz, only it made its own vocabulary at times. i don't feel a goddam thing for the main character, and if the book does that to me then it's not engaging. pretty much everything i thought would happen to her DID happen except her being an aunt for a while and OMG HER SON IS GAY SO TRAGIC I MUST READ HIS BOOK YES? it's a goddam glorified fanfic, i cant's tress that enough. i hated it. it took to fucking long to get to it's points and the only person i found interesting was nessarose cause she was tragically BORN WITHOUT ARMS OMG.

now now, i'm no stranger to drama. i don't have anything against it. what i don't like is when people try to make a super serious story about something that wasn't so hardcore to begin with. it was a childrens novel at first, for christ's sake. then a broadway show and a movie. adn htats fine! it's a light hearted wamr entertaining thing that just makes you go 'awwww' and whatever. it was meant for everyone to enjoy. (theres also supposed political propaganda there but who gives a shit.)

i guess what i'm saying is wicked tried to be SO DRAMATIC AND FULL OF DEPTH AND SUPER DUPER ADULT that i may as well read a 500+ fanfic of fucking sonic the hedgehog or what. doesn't sound so appealing, does it? well thats how it was for me. i was reading this asshole dream of how EVERYTHING in oz was ruled by sex and class systems. cause beastiality is OMG SUCH A CRIME BUT WHY SHOULD IT BEEEE WAHHHHHHHHAHAHAAAA.

that aside, i adored the musical. i thought it did the wizard of oz so much more justice than wicked the book ever did. but that's just me. you can argue all you like that you liked the book and it's better than sex but i won't give a shit, i can tell you that. though i was hoping to see nessarose hobble onto stage all armless and wiggly. wheelchair bound is second to that, i guess.

sketched during human sexuality this morning to KEEP ME AWAKE. fuck, i'm not built to stay awake before 9...

came across this obviously very late, but i actually read the book around the same time most of these comments were made... ironic..
your art stlye is very unique and I loved how youve drawn elphaba; so innocent and almost...demure which is how she should be. and the hat; gorgeous. and the flying monkeys; win...
ahem, anyway, book scarred me for life; and i definitely agree that macguire gave elphaba so many problems that she was impossible to relate to.. the only good thing that ever happened to her was Shiz and Fiyero which all kind of roll up into one...
Reading this book could be compared to having some sort of schitzophrenia (i probably mispelled that, oh well) ; you have no idea whats happening, everything you do understand makes you cringe, and you have ten million voices screaming at you all at once (does he want you to feel sory for elphaba? the animals? fiyero that he never found her? nessarose because she couldn't have the one she loved? Glinda 'cause she just never got it? what is he telling me here???)
not to mention... the hermaphrodite factor rolled into the rest of the garbage compiled within it gives it this very, very unessacary tension (what is it supposed to arouse pity? awareness? a feeling of sexual independence perhaps?)
ugh... book will haunt me for the rest of my days.. he gets credit for trying to tell Elphaba's back story and for totally winning at coming up with names (Boq, Elphaba, Fiyero, Nessarose...) but he gets blamed for making it impossible to take anything else he ever said of OZ and it's original writer seriously.
Musical however... the highlight of my Broadway obsession...
(long comment is long )

i'm glad that despite the book being very disagreeable, the musical was still fantastic! when i read wicked it felt like the author dark tone was just far too heavy for the story to lift in anyway. i don't feel like any of the characters redeemed themselves completely in the end. ><;; i haven' read the book in a long time, though. but i sure rember the parts i didn't like about it. XD

Oh wow, I wondered if I'd ever come across another person who HATED the book and LOVED the musical, like me! The book was crap, from beginning to end....ok, maybe there were a few good moments. But in general, it was crap. I actually didn't mind Elphie in the book, but Galinda was soooooo boring, which if you're a fan of the play, just.....doesn't work. Boring Galinda is like the biggest oxymoron in the world. Basically, a spin-off of the Wizard of Oz should not have taken itself so seriously.

Great art by the way. I like Elphaba's gigantic hat and the monkeys at the bottom.

seriously. i understand all the oz books have a dark tone, but i find even as a dark book it was just not pushing the darkness enough and was just putting me to sleep.

plus i think sticking to the musical, entertaining formula works just super well. ><;; there was so much more emotion into the Broadway musical than that whole book. XD really glad you like it, thank you! n_n

Firstly, may I say that I love this drawing - their faces are wonderfully expressive, and your attention to detail, especially considering that this is only a sketch, is fantastic.

However, while everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I have to take issue with a couple of things you've written. Initially - you say you like the musical but hate the book; Gregory Maguire came up with the concept of 'Wicked', so there would be no musical without the book. Also, if you think that being outcast and branded a freak your whole life is not "hardcore", then clearly you have only the barest notion of what it is like to be that person. Maguire's book, while I admit it does have its flaws, does a damn good job on emphasising the damage that ostracising an individual can do. And the book never once states that Elphaba is "awesome"; it simply attempts to show readers that most people have reasons for the wicked things they do.

That aside, I realise it's your own opinion and not a bad thing that you didn't like the book - I just wanted to draw your attention that this is a matter of your personal choice, not that Gregory Maguire is a bad writer.

I love the picture! ^^ It's amazing! ^^ Oh and wow that was quite the rant you had there, I have been reading the book myself and I don't mind it all that much, but then again I've had teachers make me read things way worse and way more boring so it's easy for me to get through. ^^ I want to see the musical though, the only reason I started reading the book was because I liked the music from the musical. [/shrugs]

in retrospect, the book wasn't that bad. but i still hate it for personal peeves. XD the musical just seemed more fitting to the wizard of oz i grew up with, plus the woman that played elphaba had quite a voice. n_n

I really like this drawing. Very cute.

It's my favorite book, but everyone has their own opinions. I like the characters a million times better in the book than the musical, they were much more...'real'. The musical was really good I'll admit, but nothing compared to the original story for me. It was too Disney.

I love this drawing! *O*

Honestly, it' my faorite book (I like the musical as well), but I totally agree with you about Elphaba in the book. I could not--and still can't--stand her. She was such an uppity little prude. xD I like the way she was portrayed in the musical /much/ better.

Anyway, lovely piece of artwork! The coloring is wonderful, and I love the tiny flying monkeys.

I haven't read the book ._. but I have to now to see if I agree with you Anyway, me and my friend (Izzle who is currently sitting next to me) loved the musical too... but we prefer the people who sang in the west-end version (Rachel Tucker and Sarah Earnshaw) to those in Broadway. And we think your drawings very cool... love the monkeys ._. and Elphaba... and Glinda or GAH Linda... and Nessa... hell we love the entire blimmin drawing great work >.< as someone below said... "the monkeys are made of pure win".

Woooow, i havn't gotten to read the actual book (and i just saw the musical ... two days ago and LOOOOOVED it) but so far it sounds terrible!
It sounds wayyyy too dramatic...
Armless Nessa?
Sex?
Politic propaganda?
Elphaba was tapped by Feiyro?!
and you BETTER be joking about the penis thing...
if that's actually in the book i swear i'll burn all the Wicked books in the tri-state area...
Anyway, yea, i just wanted to rant sooooo ... yea.
(:
Now back to ART...
REALLY cute sketches,
i loooove them~~ <3

I myself was disappointed with the book. I didn't dislike it so much, but it was just a let down from what I thought it would be. (But dear gosh, there was so much sex and it was kind of disturbing. .__.)

And Liir, oh my freaking gosh, Liir was pathetic. I felt so sorry for Candle, omg. .__.

The musical was fantastic though. eeee.

Oh, by the by, I think elphie was just warped. Anti social you know. Maybe not warped per say but all dark and twisty. Broken, but not even that atones for her behavior. Elphaba would have made a better character if the author had not made her so very Mary Sue like.

Omg I LOVE the musical ^^ It's AMAZING 8D and from what I've heard about the book, the musical is a thousand times more intersting!

Sriously! Fiyero and boq barely tie into the plot in the book the way they do in the musical! Ugh! My friend loves the book but i REFUSE to read it >.<

I totally agree with you!! the book was bloody terible!! and the musical absolutely adorably awesome(ified)!!! I think the author had a good idea with the two witches of oz thing but he WAY missed the mark in how he did it, the music took that great idea and made it what it was ment to be all along!! Wonderfull pic, love elphies expression!!

Okay I read the book because the musical isn't coming to my country and I have to say I actually kind of enjoyed it. I'll admit I thought it probably could have ended when Elphaba left Shiz and some parts were hard to struggle through and I didn't realize just how 'mature' mature meant on the blurb, I mean seriously cut out the vulgarness and there goes at least a quatre of the book! But I did get through it.

And yes Lyr is gay, literally in the sequel at least. But you're right he was pretty pathetic.

Anyway I'm sure my opinions would change if I ever saw the musical and I absolutely love this. Especially Nessarose!
