I'm not sure where you imagined this scene taking place in the book, but I believe it was after Finny returned to Devon, and the boys were creating the fantasy of a war created by bored, old men. The way Finny clings to Gene suggests he's beginning to lose himself, the part of him that Gene took away when he made Finny fall from the tree. Here, Gene is not clinging to Finny, but rather to the denial that he had not purposefully tried to harm his best friend.
I love delving into the emotion of the artwork (and in turn the artist).
