Description
'Now news came to Hithlum that Dorthonion was lost and the sons of Finarfin overthrown, and that the sons of Fëanor were driven from their lands. Then Fingolfin beheld (as it seemed to him) the utter ruin of the Noldor, and the defeat beyond redress of all their houses; and filled with wrath and despair he mounted upon Rochallor his great horse and rode forth alone, and none might restrain him. He passed over Dor-nu-Fauglith like a wind amid the dust, and all that beheld his onset fled in amaze, thinking that Oromë himself was come: for a great madness of rage was upon him, so that his eyes shone like the eyes of the Valar. Thus he came alone to Angband's gates, and he sounded his horn, and smote once more upon the brazen doors, and challenged Morgoth to come forth to single combat. And Morgoth came. That was the last time in those wars that he passed the doors of his stronghold, and it is said that he took not the challenge willingly; for though his might was greatest of all things in this world, alone of the Valar he knew fear. But he could not now deny the challenge before the face of his captains; for the rocks rang with the shrill music of Fingolfin's horn, and his voice came keen and clear down into the depths of Angband; and Fingolfin named Morgoth craven, and lord of slaves.'

Haha, probably extremely beautiful! "Like wiping your ass with silk" as the Merovingian puts it in another context. Thanks for the kind words Libra, you are a connoisseur of Tolkien's work so it's nice to hear them from you

Thank you so much! I worked on this one on and off for many months, as at the time (c. 2010) I wasn't really actively showcasing my work, and was studying and doing many other things instead. Sometimes works turn out better this way, with less pressure on them

It just takes practice, I suppose, and dedication. We all have to start somewhere. After a while it becomes fun, if not even therapeutic, as this one was Thanks for commenting!

Ah, I see~ For the shadows, did you just mix a bit of black paint into the colors you were using or just use more or something? And no problem

peet In reply to A-NonnyMouseFangirl [2015-03-18 01:04:02 +0000 UTC]
Apologies for the late reply. There are two strategies for the shadows, or lowlights, in painting. The first, as you say, is to mix the paint with darker colours (but not necessarily black), which is what is used to change the hue. The other is what's called saturation, i.e., simply using more of the same colour in the parts you want darkened. I usually use a combination of both, as in this case

Hi there! I've chosen you as the 8th person for my 200 Comments Project Challenge. Basically I'm giving comments to 200 different people in a time frame within a week
Very impressive work! I really like how the visual aspects of the drawing ties in perfectly with the written text. The war patterns on the horse as well as the knight/warrior are so very well designed and the fantasy element is depicted in such an interesting and traditional way here ^^

Nice idea, and I'm honoured to be eighth on the list Thanks so much - I'm most pleased with your reference to the visual medium closely resembling the text, which is always something I strive for.

Wonderful piece, you can see the rage on Fingolfin's face, I imagined him in a lighter armour but I like your depiction as well - great work!

peet In reply to BricksandStones [2014-11-22 12:14:32 +0000 UTC]
Thanks a lot! Fair enough regarding the armour - just out of interest, how do you picture his armour, or the Elves in general (or perhaps even the Noldor in general)? I've seen many artists depict them with masses of late medieval-style plate-mail, but I just don't envisage them like that at all. I think this portrayal here is as far as I'd go in that direction, but that's only because it's the High-King in mortal combat with the mightiest Vala

Wonderful detail! This seems really professional-- his hair, the cloth, his expression and the horses stance all give a feeling of emotion. It feels like I could be a bystander

I'm really glad you think so, although I'm not sure you'd want to be a bystander in Angband, the fortress of Morgoth . Thanks so much.

This... is... beautiful. I love the detail here, especially in the background. And the sword is perfect. I love its icy blueness - suits its name Ringil perfectly. I also like that Fingolfin's carrying a three cornered shield - I've always imagined Elves to have three cornered shields as well. The armor, especially that on the horse, is done very well; it looks realistic and just shiny enough. I can only see one thing wrong, and that is the emblem of Fingolfin on the horse's blue cloak. Since the cloak itself is rippling with the horse's movement, the emblem would be moving with the cloth too, especially if it were embroidered on or woven in. It wouldn't be stationary or flat. Unless it's metal? Though in that case it wouldn't really make sense. Anyways, great job on this!

Thank you once again for the lovely comment. You're the first to mention Ringil, and I'm glad it matches its description as I purposed to make it icy blue as per Tolkien's words.
As for the emblem, it is indeed embroidered on, but I see no reason why it can't be made of a particularly sturdy material thereby rendering it less likely to ripple with the cloth, unlike the motif of the Two Trees to Rochallor's rear. There are many instances in real life where embroidery is so thick, it retains its flat shape .

Ellosse In reply to peet [2014-10-17 18:20:32 +0000 UTC]
You're welcome! Ringil certainly succeeds here.
Oh yes, that's true. In that case then I would make the cloth crease a little around the corners of the emblem, if you know what I mean. Just my opinion, though.
