Description
'Now news came to Hithlum that Dorthonion was lost and the sons of Finarfin overthrown, and that the sons of Fëanor were driven from their lands. Then Fingolfin beheld (as it seemed to him) the utter ruin of the Noldor, and the defeat beyond redress of all their houses; and filled with wrath and despair he mounted upon Rochallor his great horse and rode forth alone, and none might restrain him. He passed over Dor-nu-Fauglith like a wind amid the dust, and all that beheld his onset fled in amaze, thinking that Oromë himself was come: for a great madness of rage was upon him, so that his eyes shone like the eyes of the Valar. Thus he came alone to Angband's gates, and he sounded his horn, and smote once more upon the brazen doors, and challenged Morgoth to come forth to single combat. And Morgoth came. That was the last time in those wars that he passed the doors of his stronghold, and it is said that he took not the challenge willingly; for though his might was greatest of all things in this world, alone of the Valar he knew fear. But he could not now deny the challenge before the face of his captains; for the rocks rang with the shrill music of Fingolfin's horn, and his voice came keen and clear down into the depths of Angband; and Fingolfin named Morgoth craven, and lord of slaves.'

That painting is wonderful!! ♥
I particularly love the horse's harness...
I've always wished to paint nice picture based of the Silmarillion since I've read it, but I feel so destabilized there are so few descriptions of the characters!!

Thanks so much - praise indeed coming from you. The beauty of the Silmarillion is that it gives your imagination the scope to wander quite far ...

"His hopeless challenge, dauntless cried
Fingolfin there, 'Come! Open wide,
dark king thy ghastly brazen doors!
Come forth whom earth and heaven abhors!
Come forth oh monstrous craven lord,
and fight with thine own hand and sword!
Thou wielder of hosts and banded thralls,
thou tyrant leaguered with strong walls,
Thou foe of gods and elvish race,
I wait thee here. Come! Show thy face!"
Gotta love Fingolfin.

Wow I love the details and the lightning in the armour and clothes. I've always thought Fingolfin's challenge was more the result of rage and despair than anything else. Valiant, yes, but not heroic, because it was clear he had no chance to win. He knows he's likely going to die. And you capture this in his expression perfectly.

This is what I thought as well -- to me, it was more a case of self-sacrifice in a way; even if he did harbour hopes for a victory in the deepest recesses of his mind.

You know... sometimes you just see pieces of art that resounds with you. I think this is one. The colors, the imaginative manner that you decorated the horse for war and even the look of pure terror upon Fingolfin's face just... makes this for me. It makes the character so much more real because it's rare that the elves are represented as anything but brave or sorrowful. I especially love the attention to detail that you painstakingly must have taken for the background. Every line looks so attentively added. The hilt of his sword and its sheath is absolutely incredible as well and looks in proportion and rather realistic for the character.
I would praise you until sun down but perhaps I should just summarize my thoughts. This is incredible. Absolutely incredible.

Not overly fond of the face, it looks too much like fear, when I imagined wrath, but everything else is great.

Out of curiousity, which part do you disagree with, the expression I think it should be or my interperation of yours? Or both?

peet In reply to ReadsOverShoulder [2010-02-16 12:49:33 +0000 UTC]
I would probably say that I disagree a little in both ways, i.e. that he would be wrathful but also very much aware of the enormity of his task. Hence, in other comments and replies he's been described as valiant/fatalistic/of despairing anger. But I want to emphasise that I'm not at all put out by your interpretation, which you are more than entitled to hold, and moreover I really am grateful for the comment .

yay some tolkien-art from you again
I love this scene almost most of the whole Noldor-story... and there's also that great song from Blind Guardian "When time stands still at the iron hill" - it fit's somehow to your picture
I'd imagined the eyes of Fingolfin a bit more piercing though, in a bright blue. His looks are full of despair, as it seems to me, though i had imagined him very angry but nevertheless, great illustrative art

'Despairing anger', perhaps? Despair at the fall and utter ruin of all the houses of the Noldor, and also the realisation that he was the 'underdog' in a duel with the mightiest being in Arda, however much his anger and steadfastness stood him in good stead. Lol. This is just me defending myself somewhat. Regardless, thanks for a great comment, one I really appreciate

Excellent scene indeed, very detailed. Colours add some nice contrast to the rest of the scenery, and with ornamented gear it's showing the glory of elven lord.
It's hard to draw/paint a horse, I have to say. Right size when compared to rider is tricky to achieve, as usually the horse seems to be too small (like I first thought when I saw this painting), or too big. I personally don't have any kind of experience when it comes to horses in rl so I dont know which puzzles me here. But these kind of technical things are just trivial matter when the overall illustration is excellent.

Yeah, it's really hard to paint a horse in proportion but I'm actually fairly pleased with the outcome this time (makes a rare change!). In fact, my problem is with Fingolfin's somewhat short legs, but having pushed his belt buckle quite high upon the waist, I think I've just about managed to get away with it. Thank you for the nice comment, and I wish I had more time to leave some on your works -- they're excellent!

God, this is really an amazing piece of work, congratulations! The few colors used stand out perfectly, the composition is great.
And this is by far one of the most epic parts in the Silmarillion. Faving this is not an option.
