Description 'They found that they were looking at a most extraordinary face. It belonged to a large Man-like, almost Troll-like, figure, at least fourteen foot high, very sturdy, with a tall head, and hardly any neck. Whether it was clad in stuff like green and grey bark, or whether that was its hide, was difficult to say. At any rate the arms, at a short distance from the trunk, were not wrinkled, but covered with a brown smooth skin. The large feet had seven toes each. The lower part of the long face was covered with a sweeping grey beard, bushy, almost twiggy at the roots, thin and mossy at the ends. But at the moment the hobbits noted little but the eyes. These deep eyes were now surveying them, slow and solemn, but very penetrating. They were brown, shot with a green light.'

The Ents, a dying race of MiddleEarth. The Entwives all went east and never returned. I'm afraid that the two genders never met again.

Tolkein added them to MiddleEarth when his daughter, angry at seeing trees near home, cut down to make way for "progress" asked her dad to write a story where trees kill the humans to stop their clearing the lands.

Thank you much - Ents can be hard to depict but I always had a clear image of Treebeard when I read it, thankfully. The challenge would be depicting Bregalad/Quickbeam and other Ents, I feel

"How can I help it if Lee envisaged him the same as me?". I think you meant "I can't help it that I envisaged him the same as Lee". You could at least mention Alan Lee in your comment as your inspiration for this. It's the same character design. And you can't say - since you're a Lord of the Rings fan- that you had no idea about Alan Lee's famous Treebeard portrait: [link]

I'm just pointing it out. By no means i'm attacking you or anything.

Cheers.

I've never hidden from anyone the huge influence Lee has had on me and my works, either in replies to comments on DA, Elfwood or private emails over the last decade or so -- I mean, he's listed as my first 'favourite artist' on my DA front page, for a start.

I'm not offended, nor do I feel under attack. Cheers.

Not saying you haven't, only that by reading the comments on this deviation, that didn't actually come across for me; thus, the reason of my comment. But no worries, now i know.

Have a good one mate.

DutchOrca In reply to Fredendil [2010-02-11 15:21:55 +0000 UTC]

I must say I agree with you, Fredendil.

Although this is really well done, you can't deny that you took your inspiration from Alan Lee's version of Treebeard. Every Tolkien-fan knows his work.
When I saw this in my deviations, it immediately reminded me of Alan. As did your other work about Galadriel and the hobbits.

And you could have mentioned this in the comment. And just Fredendil said, this is not an attack, the painting is very good, I just would have like to have seen a little more honesty in your description.

Wonderful rendition of Treebeard.. i love the moss and little twigs and branches that make up his hair! And his eyes seem deep and wise, just like they should.

And I really admire the way you use watercolours.. it's so difficult to keep the painting clear and let the paper show through in some spots..

carolin54323 [2005-11-18 13:42:04 +0000 UTC]

Treebeard had a much better sense of humour in the book, and they didn't get the details right for the ents in the film, for example, I don't think they had seven toes on each foot, and their arms were a little too branch-like. I like this painting of Treebeard, very well done. I personally think that ents did reflect various forms of tree, but that's just my opinion, although I think Quickbeam (Or Bregalad as he ought be called) was supposed to look a little like a rowan-tree, mind you I may have got that wrong. It really doesn't matter though and I wasting comment-space.

I love your representation, the textures and details are fantastic, and his expression makes him look like he's going to say something about hastiness.. You must draw an ent-wife!

Nice... treebeard totally rocks. I love the way you chose to portray him, he seems so wise and so powerful at the same time, just the way he is in the books. I thought the movie portrayal was good, although he had a better sense of humor in the books. By the way, if theres an ent for every type of tree, doesnt that mean there are redwood ents and bonsai ents? where were they in the books? Awesome work

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

peet In reply to Shodan127 [2004-01-14 21:36:14 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the comment. Tolkien's work is mainly based in lands similar to North-Western Europe, so trees such as the bonsai wouldn't even be applicable. Moreover, it's not necessarily said in the book that there are ents for every type of tree, since Ents aren't actually trees anyway, they're simply forest-dwelling beings.

As for the movie Treebeard (and Ents in general), I found them to be portrayed very weakly.
