    Species: Umbrum/Shadow-Ponies
    Loyalty: Sombra

[Brief History]

The Umbrum were rumored to have gone missing after Sombra's banishment, but they still lived, hiding in the ruins of his old palace until the inevitable return of their king. Awaiting their king, they fell into a deep slumber, that was almost like death. When Sombra was reawakened, the Umbrum rose again, ready to serve their king. If an Umbrum were ever to betray the king or his kingdom, it is considered a great crime in Umbrum tradition. Legends tell of a small Umbrum revolution that took place moons ago. Sombra was hurt and ended the revolution almost immediately. None of the anarchists survived his rage...

Umbrum are naturally loyal to whoever they swear fealty to. They will fight to the death to honor their king, which is why they supported the takeover of the Crystal Empire eons ago.

Umbrum are only born as unicorns. There is no record of a pegasus or earth-pony Umbrum. Much less Alicorn. The Umbrum enslaved ponies of typically earth-pony or pegasus race to reach heights or depths they could never reach themselves.

Umbrum were labeled cruel, shallow creatures that only cared about their kings' wellbeing. Once Sombra reformed, the Umbrum reformed with him, and now they yearn for reconciliation for their crimes against Equestria. They are very much like commonponies, but there are a few physical and magical prowesses they have.

[Magical Capabilities]

Umbrum magic is much stronger than normal unicorns' magic. From the moment their born, Umbrum magic is about the strength of a normal unicorn. By the time an Umbrum becomes an adult, "...they are stronger than a well-taught mage of Canterlot" as Starswirl once wrote. Royal Umbrum, however, are nearly as powerful as Alicorn themselves.

Their strongest magic is done in the psyche of other ponies. Umbrum is most well known for their prowess in the field of mental magics and plagues. Most commonly, they use their magic to forcefully rally ponies to their kings' rule. Hypnotism to be specific.
It is this very magic that Sombra was feared for in days of yore. Although all Umbrum inherit this magic, it is stronger in Umbrum of power, specifically royal Umbrum.

Another spell that Umbrum have mastered is the art of pulling black [Royal Umburm rarely summon red] crystals from the ground below. In this manner, they were thought to craft crystals from nothing. The weaker the Umbrum, the harder it is to pull these crystals from the ground. It takes intense practice to perfect this art.

[Hierarchy/Ranking]

Like most kingdoms of their time, the Umbrum is divided into different rankings, based on the levels of trust they build with the king:

Chief Advisor: Advisors are highly prized in Umbrum history since most can recall dates that most Umbrum have forgotten. Advisors are often seen at the kings' side and are often tasked with important decisions, specifically those concerning the kingdom or its subjects.

General: More physically advanced than other Umbrum, these soldiers are normally placed at the forefront of a battle. Due to their physical advancement, a General's magic is not as strong as that of a standard Umbrum soldier. However, they have grown to use their pointed, crooked horns in battle as spears. This is what is believed to have started the red hue in Umbrums' horns, due to the bloodstains on a General's horn. Generals' are usually assistants to the Chief Advisor, assisting in tactical decisions for the king.

Foot-Soldier: Common troops. They are like pawns to the king and are bound to do anything he so pleases. It is rumored that there are thousands of these troops hiding in every shadow that hides in Equestria. These Umbrum are the common image of Umbrum, and most ponies think of these troops when Umbrum are mentioned.

Common: The typical subjects of the Umbrum. Legends suggest that these were often Umbrum who were not enrolled in the army, women, or children. Female Umbrum are highly prized since there aren't many. Female Umbrum are rarely made soldiers unless it is a dire need.
Umbrum foals do not begin training until they reach ten years of age. Once training is complete [Usually when they reach 20 years of age] they are immediately dubbed soldiers or given other positions based on their qualifications. If a Umbrum was ever to fail training, they would be exiled from the kingdom, or placed in lowly positions, rarely to be seen again.

Treasurer: Tasked with guarding the kings' possessions, these Umbrum are more strictly trained after basic lessons. Most Treasurers never see the light of day, so their eyes are specially evolved to see in the dark. Special cases suggest that their eyes are so underused, that red crystals take their place, rendering the Treasurer blind. Treasurers are naturally spiteful, and keep a wary eye on the long, dark corridors that they roam. Nopony can enter their station without explicit permission from the king, or they will regret it.
Few have infiltrated the Umbrums' vaults. Many doubt they have ever been invaded.

[Final Notes]
  • Umbrum are a force to be reckoned with in the heat of battle. With their strong bonds to their king, Umbrum will put their lives on the line for their king.
  •  A female Umbrum is born in 5 out of 12 Umbrum births.
  • Only the king is allowed to wed. Outside of the royal line, one must get permission to marry from both the couple's parents and the king himself
  • Umbrum mate for life, and are very committed to their mates.
  • Even though Umbrum may seem close-minded toward other kingdoms, they welcome outsiders with open hooves, as long as they respect their customs, and agree to follow them.
  • Though the king is rumored to be ruthless, he prizes his subjects like trophies and treats each of his subjects like his children. A Umbrum revolution is a personal insult to the king, and the king will not hesitate to punish those who rise against him.
