Description
A new paper illustration for a friend of mine at work . I brought in the book "Confetti" by Brittany Lee a few weeks ago to work and my friend loved the mermaids in it (it's an awesome book! Go check out her work here: britsketch.blogspot.com/) .So I decided to do a different take on a mermaid for her. It was a lot of fun! I've had a lot of stressful things going on the last few months, so my creativity really dried up. But this idea got into my head and I had it drawn out, cut up, and glued down all within a week! Looking forward to the next project now!

Yes, orcas and Inuits both eat seals. But mermaids aren't real, so I figured I could make up my own logic with this one. Glad you like it, though!

I assume that may have been the artist's intentions? A seal wandering up to a person/creature that is reminiscent of their enemy shows strong trust and friendliness in this mermaid character. It sort of makes me assume that the mermaid is just that amicable and appealing, that a creature who could easily be afraid of her is going to show trust instead. It could be assumed that the mermaid has ulterior motives, but the colours and expressions do not give me that impression.
At least that's what I gathered from it, eh.
Certainly beautiful work.

Thank you! It's roughly 10" x 7". I don't have the original any more, so I don't remember the exact measurements. But it's slightly smaller than a standard sheet of paper.

Thank you! I like that you called it an orca, too, instead of a killer whale. The misnomer always annoyed me, since it's technically a dolphin, not a whale.

I've kind of had a soft spot for orcas after watching "Free Willy" eons ago.

Wow, that's such a great idea! It turned out wonderfully as well. And from looking at Brittany Lee's art I can see why you had to do it! Her work is extremely alluring! It seems like very tedious work (unfortunately for me that would cause some great stress). I would love to do something like this one day though. : )
Love it!!

Thank you! For me, it's more meticulous than tedious, but if you're not interested in small, detail-oriented projects, it would certainly be tedious. You should try it sometime--just do something with larger shapes!

Haha, oh I wouldn't say I'm not interested in detail work, I just wouldn't see the light of day for awhile if I started to do that. I just get so entranced in it, and I have to make everything perfect! Thank you for the advice though, I think I might actually try it with bigger pieces. Christmas is coming up and I think my mom needs a card like that. : ) Thanks for sharing your work, it really does get some creative ideas going!

Thank you! I actually use an exacto blade, which is easier to control. But I like the sound of "scissor skills" better!
