[magic] Presence Suppression
Xavier's magic allows them to almost completely suppress their own presence, making themselves hard to notice and for people to keep track of them, sinking into the background and not sticking out. It's not straight-up invisibility - they're still physically there and would be caught on film, camera, and other such physical mediums. Instead, they pretty much make it so that they appear so unremarkable and unimportant that people just don't bother taking notice of them, making it difficult to pick them out in a crowd or remember they were there.
Their magic works best when used in a crowd; the definition of what a crowd is, or how many people make a crowd is a bit fuzzy, but it seems that, at the very least, a group of 10 people in relatively close proximity to each other is the point from which their magic works the best. If they use it when with a smaller group of people or with only a single person, the most that would happen is make it harder for the person(s) to recall small details about them (e.g. their hair color, what clothing they wore, etc.). Furthermore, Xavier can only cast this magic on themselves, at least for the moment. With more practice and guidance, they could potentially include others into the spell through some means, as well as improve its effectiveness.

At first glance, Xavier always appears to be at least a little bit lost in their thoughts, just sort of cruising on auto-pilot through day-to-day life and seeing where things go. This is true, to an extent - they are incredibly laid-back, rarely ever visibly stressed and often with a gentle smile on their face. "It'll be fine, don't worry," they always say, no matter the situation. Optimist to the bone, even if things seem rough. They take things too lightly sometimes, but generally they're able to tell when things are 'Capital B' Bad. They do notice when or if people are feeling a certain way and empathize with them. They're a calming presence to be around, always willing to lend an ear or a helping hand to anyone in need.
Despite their absent-mindedness, Xavier can be incredibly focused when they click with something. In group projects, they're the kind of person who seems like they won't be doing anything for their part of the project, but then come to the day of submission with impeccable A+ work. If something interests them, or if there's work to be done with a clear goal to accomplish, they'll hunker down and get it done, no matter what. They do things at their own pace, and don't mind if work takes longer than anticipated to be finished. While commendable, their dedication can often turn into accidental stubbornness - even if something isn't working, they'll keep going at it, thinking they can make it work. Almost as if lacking a frame of reference for when one should give up on something or call it quits. While they won't outright refuse help if offered, they usually won't ask for any until it's way too late. A switch that keeps flipping between aimlessness and laser-guided focus, they seem to be in need of some sort of guidance in life.
Unexpectedly, they do lean more on the extroverted side, but somewhat low-energy. They greatly enjoy the company of others, either one-on-one or larger groups, but they tend to be a much more passive presence - usually quiet, they let others lead the conversation. This is especially obvious when in larger groups of friends, where they usually hang somewhere in the background, only rarely ever chiming in. They often end up gravitating towards anyone else in a group situation that's on the more quiet side, those who seemingly want to be included but are afraid to speak up. They don't want people to feel like they're alone or excluded.
Xavier appears to be very open and impersonal, with their heart seemingly on their sleeve, but it takes them time to truly be open with someone. They tend to be open about more "objective" things, their likes and dislikes, interests, surface-level things like that, but more personal stuff is kept hidden for a longer time. They seem to be doing it almost on accident - based on some kind of inherent fear of annoying people, they open up just enough for people to gain an estimate of they they're like; a free trial of a person, if you will. They usually don't mind if things between them and others stay on just the level of acquaintances, so if you really want things to go beyond just acquaintances, you need to be the one to lead the charge. Stick around them, ask them to join you for things, be direct with them. They greatly appreciate things like that, and they'll make sure you know that.

tl;dr - kid that seemingly grew up in a family of mundanes later finds out they can do magic and that one of their parental units is a witch, and after
a lot of Thinking they decide to go to St. Spell to learn more about the whole magic business and maybe finally find some purpose to their life
Xavier grew up in a relatively well-off family in Paris, France, a single child to a mother and a father. Their mother was a nurse, incredibly dedicated to her work and often absent working long shifts, and their father did work for a tech company. They never really remembered exactly what he did, something with QA? One of those office desk jobs with the occasional longer work hours when that crunch kicked in. Because of their work, either or both of their parents often ended up absent for a good chunk of the day, leading to Xavier having to learn to take care of themselves rather early on in life. They didn't really have any other family living close by who'd take care of them; father's family was back in Portugal, and mother's family was weirdly absent from conversation. Xavier didn't really get to meet that side of the family until much later in life, with their mother keeping things vague - something about differing interests, her wanting to keep her independence, something along those lines. Xavier didn't mind it, didn't really stick their nose into trying to figure out more. She had her reasons and they respected that. Despite all that, they were still a loving and caring family, trying to support each other as best as possible.
For the most part, Xavier's life went on without any major events, more or less uneventful. They were always a quiet kid, more of the bookish type. Smart kid, good grades, the classmate everyone went to for homework help. They didn't have too many friends, just a handful that they were very close to, some of which they're still in contact with to this day. Childhood, school time, years they spent just cruising along in life, not many thoughts given regarding their future, no grand dreams or schemes. They had small and humble ideas, sure - a flower shop of their own would've been nice, or work at a tiny book store. Their parents weren't pushing them in any specific direction either, they wanted them to figure things out for themselves. There were certainly suggestions, but nothing concrete though; future them would figure it out eventually.
One sort of notable event, and their first proper introduction to magic, happened around the end of high school, they must've been around 17 or 18 years old. It was during a school trip to some kind of museum, a busy day with many people around. During the entire trip Xavier felt a bit weird, and weird things were happening - there were multiple instances where their classmates forgot they were there with them, like their memory was faulty, and seemed to be ignored often. Sure they were always kind of a wallflower and not very noticeable, but this felt... off. This culminated in them accidentally wandering off away from their class, getting themselves lost in the building. It took them a bit to notice what happened, but once they did they panicked just a tiny bit. They ran around for a bit, trying to find their group all the while being seemingly completely ignored by everyone. It all felt weird and not normal.
They were eventually finally approached by someone - a gentle touch on their shoulder, a woman they didn't recognize, yet the only person that seemed to notice them. With words of assurance, she told them she was a social worker from the Circle, an organization that deals with... magic. Whatever was happening to them currently was caused by their own magic finally emerging, but this being their first time, it seems to be causing some troubles. This all seemed just a tiny bit suspicious to Xavier, but seeing that this was seemingly the only person actually giving them attention, they listened and went with her. She brought them back to their school, conveniently enough just as their class was coming back from the museum trip. Their classmates seemed to not really question anything, nothing that they were just weirdly quiet during the whole trip. The Circle worker left very quickly, noting that they may see each other relatively soon again.
Later the same day when Xavier got back home from class, they saw the same woman from before together with their parents! They didn't expect it to be literally this soon. It was a rather short conversation, the Circle worker briefly explaining what happened, mentioning something about a school for witches, offering any additional guidance, other generic stuff you'd expect in such a conversation. She left, and now it was just Xavier and their parents. It was finally time for them to have a proper conversation, namely about their mother's family business.
Their mother did, in fact, come from a family of witches - it was a family line that used to have minuscule relevance in the magic circles, but over several generations fell into more obscurity until it just became a name among many others. Some of her family members are still active witches in some capacity, but she didn't want to have anything to do with that - she wanted to forge her own path, pursue her own dreams. She had always been passionate about medicine and helping people so she became a nurse, eventually met their father, and lived happily like that. Their father was aware of her unusual background early on in their relationship and respected it, not thinking much about it. She had planned on explaining things to Xavier at some point, but the right moment never came, until now.
With this whole Thing now in the picture, there was a lot to think about and consider. The Circle worker did suggest the possibility of honing this newly emerged magic at a school, namely the St. Spell Conservatory of Magic - not a necessity, but certainly an option. This all felt way too sudden to Xavier. This possibility sure did throw a wrench in their plans that weren't really plans; besides the very cute idea of running a flower-shop or something like that, they felt kind of aimless, without any idea what to do with their life. Seeing as they still had to finish high school first, the St. Spell thing was put aside temporarily. Xavier's parents were very supportive to them, their mother especially. She wasn't in no way against them pursuing magic - if this is what they wanted, she would be standing by them the whole way. In the meantime, she taught them a tiny bit more about magic, and helped them figure out their own magic a tiny bit more, just to feel comfortable with it.
Once done with high school, they spent a couple more years doing miscellaneous things - took some part-time jobs, did some travelling, met some new people, that kind of stuff. The Conservatory idea stewed in the back of their mind the whole time. It seemed exciting, yet still a bit unreal! It did call to them, a whole new world to learn about and discover, new people to meet... maybe they could find their calling in life there?
Eventually, after talking it out with their parents, they finally decided to apply to St. Spell.

- while their usual clothing choices lean into more earthy, warm colors and simple, comfort-over-anything fits, they go absolutely ham when it comes to accessories. Xavier has a rather extensive collection of various glasses and earrings, all of various degrees of ostentatious and mildly obnoxious. Most pieces tend to be on the cheaper and worn down side, since they love getting things from second-hand and vintage stores (reduce, reuse, recycle and what have you), but some are the genuine luxury stuff, usually gotten as gifts from family.
- very interested in botany and plants of all kinds! Their room is filled with plants that they take great care of, and a secret dream of theirs is to one day run a flower shop of their own. They intend of visiting any classes and clubs at St. Spell related to botany and gardening, and you'll be sure to find them around the school's greenhouses quite often.
- would love to learn to play an instrument at some point, just needs someone to motivate them to actually commit to it.
- fluent in English and French, and knows very basic Portuguese.
- their wand was a gift from their mother - allegedly a family heirloom, it was a bracelet that she got from her mother, who got it from her mother before, and so on. The bracelet is made from leather strips braided together, with a silver charm of a hare tied to it. They got it at a young age, around the end of elementary school. While not initially intended to be a wand, it seemed to be the thing that helped Xavier keep their magic in check once it finally awakened. Maybe the years of it being handed from one witch to another imbued it with some arcane properties.
