Backstory: Due to the whole 'MLP friendship is magic' thing, I went looking for 'girls shows'.First I went to Ruby Gloom and I immediately remembered why I loved it so dearly. That atmosphere, those characters...Why didn't I made fanart of it yet?
I remember that the StrawBerry Shortcake cartoon of 2003 felt gender neutral. In my research to the history, I found there was/is another new Strawberry shortcake 3D-cartoon in 2009. I wasn't that happy with her 2009 appearance update, however it was actually quite interesting too, as you can see they looked at the original '80 design. 2009 gave her her green white socks back ,her 'hat-type' and her cat has dots again. Still, the '80 design is my favourate, as she is recognisable with her round shape and doll-like-features with dreadlock-like-hair. Her 2009 appearance makes her look like some random colorful chibi.
The idea: I realised how much Strawberry Shortcake and Ruby Gloom are alike: Both the happiest girl 'you will love' and want to visit, redheaded with short hair and freckles, having a cat who resemble their owners appearances, having stripped socks and similair footwear, having a short dress with puff sleeves.
I think it's the same person within different themed universes!
I have a bit of trouble with the name of the clothing style of Shortcake. It would be called 'kawaii', but I don't want to call it that because she's American and 30 years old! So just 'cute'? Cute vs Goth?
The work itself: I mixed Strawberry shortcake with all 3 generations to make it work. Her hat is a mix of the G1 hat with the ribbon of the G2 hat. Her body is a mix of G1 and G2 too. I wanted to keep her round because that is how Shortcake should look. I gave her the outfit of G3 because it would be in better contrast with Ruby. Same reason why I choose G2 for her hair. G1 has dreadlocks and G3 has long pink hair, so G2 worked the best. The cat I took is G3 based, as it seemed to fit the best with this drawing. Her name is Custard.
Ruby is just Ruby from the cartoon with her cat Doom.
I was struggeling with this picture for a while and I really would LOVE to get Feedback and criticism. (I always do, but especially now.) After gazing upon it I felt it looked...hysterical. As if the characters disappear within the 'chaos' of the background. However, when I leave the screen on and come back into the room, I don't feel this way. It even looks very good when viewed with some distance. I' m not sure what the problem is, or if there is a problem at all and I would really like some help with it.

I will admit, I've never seen the Strawberry Shortcake cartoons but I loved her toys. And I simply ADORE Ruby Gloom!
So this is a very win-win for me :3

As for the background, it might work better if the gradient was switched in the back. Blue behind miss shortcake, and pink behind Ruby Gloom.

Wow!! vayaque se parecen, las medias, el corte del vestido, los zapatos, las dos son pelirrojas, sus gatitas. Perono se tú, pero yo me voy por el lado de Ruby, Ruby digamos que es una copia mejorada de Rosita Fresita, para ser sinceros me gusta más el look de Ruby, no es ñoño, con moños, olanes, encages, rosa... I´m glad to know you are still alive. Probably you don´t remember me (cause i´m not someone who deserves to be remembered), i made a deviation named Gloom white and you asked me if i was going to submit it in the song contest. I thought we could be friends, then i concluded you have friends enough.
Due the outlines the figures don´t lost with the background. I hate to say this but surely most of people wouldn´t notice the clothes research you made if they don´t read the explanation first. Also you could use the new face with a smallest nose. Time ago i was thinking someone could make a comparison between Ruby and Strawberry, i hated to think that cause i thought the intention could be show Ruby as a not original idea; it´s good to see you didn´t make this pic for that. Too i was thinking how could it be if Ruby meets Rainbow Brite, they could be friends but maybe at the end they woundn´t like so much each other.

Oh, please don't talk so low about yourself. I do remember, and I shouldn't know why we can't be friends. I'm not sure what I'm doing what makes me look like a jerk, maybe it's about different cultures. I think I'm gonna write a journal about it tomorrow.
I only draw because I love the fiction. Even if Ruby wouldn't be original I still love her. I'm not sure how Ruby would react on the colors of Shortcake though.

Since nowadays all is about copying the celebrities, people use to show other concepts as ridiculous. I didn´t said you were jerk but you are right about culture, for some reason it seems be arrogant means to be cool. We can´t be friends since i´m not someone interesting, i frequently comment my friends deviations but i only make fanart.

Yeah, the design in the background maybe sticks out too much. If the pattern was more transparent you could still see it and think it's cute, but it wouldn't demand your attention so much.
Overall, this looks pretty good though.

Two of my favorite redheads together in one place!
I've seen very little of the '80s Strawberry Shortcake series but I adore the 2001-2008 versions (the middle of that range was my favorite, with better designs but before the "teen" version). In this form she is remarkably cute and probably the best I've seen of that era's fan art. (Ah, I read your explanation about mixing the styles just before I was about to post, but I always write up my comments before reading the artist's comments.)
Custard is lovely in that design too, though personally I absolutely adore her personality in the DiC version. (I was disappointed when the Moonscoop version came out and she didn't talk.) Strawberry's legs seem to be different widths, but without finding episodes or models I can't be sure that the side angle should be thinner. (Counter intuitive to me, but I won't shoot off my thoughts without the facts.)
Ruby looks like her normal cheerful self, very happy to make a new friend with the same sunny outlook (even if Ruby sees very little of the sun). It took me a moment (and looking at some of the episodes) to double check because I'm so accustomed to nearly everyone stylizing her to be more human-like in their fan art. Again with the legs, her right leg looks a bit wide for her shoe at this angle, but I'd have to skim episodes and take snapshots of particular angles to say for sure.
The alternating logos in the background work very nicely too, though I was examining the girls so carefully that it took me a while to notice the gradient. At first I didn't see Strawberry's hat against the background, but I have protanomaly ("weak red color blindness"), so that along with the strawberries and my focus are probably what caused that. However, the girls themselves always stood out just fine to me.
They're lovely and sweet, especially together. I also like how their cats are in similar poses and making the picture sort of a mirror view of the two, though there are obvious differences in the girls' poses (outside arms and legs, etc.) along with them facing a bit towards each other.
BTW, a few months ago I finished two stories, one for Ruby Gloom and the other for Strawberry shortcake, at around the same time. Cosmic intervention? Nah, it's really just different people having the same good tastes.
